Why the German ".de" web suffix?

Excuse my ignorance, but why are websites from Germany ending with a .de suffix? Does it have something to do with the word "Deutsche"?

Germany in german is Deutschland.

Yes, "de" is the "2 letter ISO code" for Germany... ;)
