Hi to all

i kinda cross posted an original request for info on how to convert avi to dvd, but was told about dvd2svcd...seemed good.

read guides, installed drivers, tmpg enc etc..loaded avi file for encoding and the first thing i noticed is that it grayed out the option for ntsc-pal box.

didn't think much of it, although i'm using pal standard.

Having started the encode process i was gutted it was going to take 24 hours to analyze the avi file and encode.

When i got back from work, the encode had seemed to fail at the authoring point. I've included the log files

can anyone help with this, i dont know where the process went wrong...and also why did it appear to encode in NTSC and not give me the option to convert to PAL???

thanks

Some problems seemed to appear during video encoding.
But I don't know what the hell could be happened with TMPEG.
What is the size of Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_NTSC.mpv?

NTSC2PAL:
It is greyed out when source is PAL, or source is NTSC but selected 'use source audio' on the audio tab.
If you check the file with Gspot what does it say?

I think you are right on both points, Manngo

Firstly video length seems very short judging from the free drive space before and after video encoding. @Wobblybob: If the Encoded_video_TMPGEnc_NTSC.mpv file is shorter than about 3.75GB, what setting are you using in the Rate Control Mode box on the encoder tab?

Secondly, it appears you are trying to use source audio from your AVI.
Uncheck this box in the audio tab. It appears from your log that multiplexing of video and audio failed because your audio is not DVD-compliant. The "Use source audio" mode for AVI is really an expert feature and should not be used unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

thanks for the response folks...

i'm gonna check out and try the things u suggest when i get back from work and have a bit more time to play:)

thanks again, andy

ps usefull guide in stickys for new posters, 'cos this is something i'm trying to learn for the fun of doing it, it's nice not to get flamed too often:D although apologies for the use of question marks in the original title, hadn't read that part if the sticky at the time i sent it

hiya,

have just read the replies fully and realised i left out some information you asked me for...sorry about that:o

@manngo gspot says x:y 720x416 (1.73:1) [=45:26], fps 23.97, kbps 716, divx 5.0, bvop 1, qpel 0, gmc 0, audio mpeg 1 layer 3, container avi v1.0, interleave 55ms, audio split across interleave, file length correct. codecs installed on vid and audio, but it doesn't mention anything about pal or ntsc. hth

@nick The file was shorter than 3.75Gb, can't remember exactly tho. I am using 2pass vbr in the encoder tab, which is what it defaulted to i think. I was left with 4 files, at least 2 of them with an audio extension and 1 mpv file (which froze my system when i tried to exec it)

The audio thing...use source file was checked so have unchecked it, although now i have the option to check or uncheck something called autodetect azid gain 2pass. at the minute, this is checked.

the output is stereo, although i am being offered mpeg 5.1, dual channel. think i will stick with stereo for now but am curious to know if i can use any of the other settings.

i have a feeling tmpg caused the ntsc issue, it was a new install and i believe defaulted to ntsc.

thanks, wobblybob

Let's come back to that one :)
When we've got the other settings right, if we still produce short video we'll have another look. If you are using 2-pass VBR you should be OK, the only problem I can imagine is the bitrate tab. Ensure Max Average is set no lower than 7200 and the disc size to 4350 or 4464.
EDIT - actually, how long is the file you're converting (in mins and seconds, not bytes) as if it's only say, half an hour I wouldn't expect a full disc. The number of frames, however, suggests it is longer.

That's fine :)
Select a good audio bitrate - there's no need to skimp for DVD output so go 224 or higher.

Leave MPEG 5.1 well alone! You will probably end up with an unplayable disc. At any rate, the AVI file you are converting is only stereo. If you convert a DVD, or an AVI with an AC3 5.1 soundtrack, that's when to use the Source Audio box to get the 5:1 track on your output disc.

It was the "Use Source Audio" that caused your problem. Your file is NTSC, 23.976fps. PAL runs at 25fps. So to convert NTSC2PAL you have to speed the video up by a fraction. If you did this, but did not alter the audio (ie used the source audio) it would obviously go out of sync.

Therefore if Use Source Audio is checked, NTSC2PAL is greyed out, since the two are not compatible. On that note, you probably don't need to do NTSC2PAL anyway. If your TV is fairly modern, chances are it will accept an NTSC signal. Also, although you live in a PAL country, your DVD player will almost certainly play NTSC (it doesn't need to be multiregion for this) so NTSC2PAL may be unnecessary. Do some testing :)

thanks, wobblybob
If you are named after the extra-strong ale, try encoding BEFORE you drink it! It'll probably work much better :D

:D thanks for all the advice:D

sorry about the time it;s taken to get back to you...life has an annoying habit of getting in the way of fun sometimes.

anyway, as title suggests, this has worked and i've got a disc image ready for dvd decrypter.

so thanks again, can't fault your forum folks...will defintely keep looking in for other advice too

all the best

@nick, alas my ale swillin' days are not as frequent as they once were, so wobblybob is more about how i am when i am drunk, trust me, i have the bruises to proove it:D
