An Mpeg4 decoder observation

At this present moment in time I have just 2No Mpeg4 DSdec filters installed on my PC. One is Nero's NEVideo.ax (v2.0.2.2). The other is XviD's (experimental AR filter) produced by Minolta.

Anyway, earlier today I de-registered both... and would you "Adam-and-Eve it" all my Mpeg4 encodes still played!

According to GSpot the following filters etc are being used to generate the image: -

Now I maybe a bit dim about this sort of thing... but how come I'm able to see anything?

Maybe because DirectShow falls back to VfW codecs if it can't find a playback filter?

Whatever is registered to the fourcc. Virtualdub can tell you in the file information.

Yes, that is the reason, and "AVI Decompressor" is the name Microsoft uses for the DS filter that "wraps" VFW codecs, so all DS graphs using VFW look kinda like that. But GSpot is supposed to try to determine which is being used and show it (i.e. using "VFW:<filtername>" rather than "AVI Decompressor") so I'll check to make sure that functionality isn't broken. In any event, GSpot should still list show it in the codec list - use that function and sort by the "type" column if you want to see all your VFW codecs together.
