View Full Version : Final dvd size problems...

Hi.

I've searched and read about some topics about this kind of problem and did as some answers suggested, but...
I've made a test with 2 movies (2001: A space odyssey appr. 7gb and X-files fight the future appr. 7.3gb also).
Both time i got a "small" size movie (2.5gb and 2.7gb).
I ripped the movies with dvddecrypter "all files mode", no problem.
Then i started DVD Rebuilder (0.61) and changed the settings as suggested here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_rebuilder_tutorial.cfm
The first movie made with one click option and ended with a 2.5gb movie.
Second movie first i "Prepared" the movie, then i started RBOpt to check that the size was on 100% (made no changes here), then "Encode" and then "Rebuild", but ended with a 2.7gb movie.

What am I doing wrong ?
Hope anybody can help me.

Thx
GDK

Here's what's happening... Look at the Excluded_Audio_Sub_Size variable in the [Status] area. You have a 7.3GB source from which you are subtracting 4.6GB in non-selected audio/subs... so the remaining original size is ~2.7GB before DVD-RB even does any encoding...

Must be a music disc that you are removing LPCM, eh?

GDK
22nd September 2004, 14:09
I can see what you mean, but this disc i test is the X-Files Fight the future movie. No audio type dvd.
If i look at the main movie in dvd shrink in re-author mode the movie is 5060 MB + 2 audio channels 334 MB and 167 MB, way over the final 2.7gb that i get.
No audio channels are removed in DVD Rebuilder.

So something else must be wrong or... ???

It would help if you are more explicit regarding the verions of the software you are using and the exact settings, ie:
- CCE? Basic or SP? Version (full 2.67.xx.xx), Trial or Retail
- EclCCE?
- Avisynth? , etc.
- Number of passes, Half D1 for Extras? Steal space from Extras

I think that a transcript or your REBUILDER.INI will be helpfull

Also, you mention you used RBOpt to check the target size (it said 100%). In the sme line that the percentage RBOpt indicates the target size in sectors (If you have not made any change it should be around 2236000)

I'm not an expert, so my comments are just from an user who does not have problems with RB:

- The info from RBOpt is correct

- From your REBUILDER.INI file it seems to me your setup is "REMOVE ALL" audios (see the Languaje111111..). Or it is just the opposite?
Please be sure that, in the right window of RB that, when you highlight the main VTS (the larger one)in the left window, the audios are checked.

- Your eclPasses is set to 6. I understand CCE Basic only does 2-pass

- Be sure you are using a compatible version of MPEG2Dec3dg.dll. If unsure, download the recomended in the Sticky post (RB Settings) at the top of this forum in Doom9

Ok.

I see that you are right about the language, but in the optionlist english, danish and some others was unchecked, strange...
Tried again to check/uncheck and now that option in ini file seems right.
I will try and use CCE SP 2.50 instead with 6 passes, this should give better quality than 2 passes in CCE Basic right ?
The MPEG2Dec3dg.dll should be a compatible one.

But thx until now, will try again and see if those changes helps.

Remember you should use EclCCE for 2.50.

As you are trying to solve this size problem, I would go with 2 pass for the testing, so probably you can get the results in a one third of the time it takes to do 6 passes:)

Also, it is my understanding the quality gain by increasing the number of passes goes down by each additional pass. I have read that with 2 passes ( 3 passes in CCE talk)you get a real gain. With 3 passes (4 in CCE) the gain is very small. With 4 (5 in CCE) is just marginal. After that, quality improvements would be minimal or non-existing. In a recent post a guy recommended one pass (2 in CCE) as, in his opinion, multipass tended to result reduce the bitrate spikes from the original.

Note: the difference between the actual number of encoding passes and CCE passes is that CCE produces first a .vaf file before doing the encoding, and count it as the first pass.

GDK

Hehe.
You are right, why set it to 6 passes when testing, stupid me :D
I also found out that the MPEG2Dec3dg.dll i had was different from the one in the "mod" zipfile.
I try again now, but i see that after prepare i still get the "Excluded_Audio_Sub_Size=4793" (see jdobbs answer) inside the REBUILDER.INF.

GDK Maybe you are confusing the lists, you have 6 subtitles selected to keep, but no audio channels.

Have you been manually editing the INI file? I notice that the "Language" and "sLanguage" parameters don't have the "=" inserted.

GDK
22nd September 2004, 21:15
I just copied and paste.
But anyway now it works fine, i deleted ini files and reinstalled CCE etc and made a new setup from scratch.
Really don't know what went wrong before, but probably some wrong files used.
And i didn't edited the ini files, strange...

The quality in a VBR 2 pass in the CCE advanced settings is pretty ok.
But wich pass do you recommend to setup in DVD Rebuilder under the CCE advanced options ?
And wich CCE version do you recommend for best quali and fastest encoding ?

And thx for the help and explanations until now ;)

You're using CCE Basic -- it will only do 2 passes no matter what you select. The only real advantage of another version like SP is more passes -- and frankly passes 3-10 have little impact.

How long is the movie?

GDK
23rd September 2004, 12:03
I have both, basic and SP 2.50.
The x-files is 121 min. + some extras.

But now at least its working fine with size etc. ;)

I read on other forums that if a movie is more than 140-150 minutes, then its better to give at least 6 passes, 140 and shorter then its ok with 4-5 passes with CCE SP

Is there any difference lets say, using CCE basic 2 passes and CCE SP 2.50+ 2 passes in the encoding quality ? Or the 2 programs encode in same quality ?

jdobbs
23rd September 2004, 13:28
There is a difference. But -- the impact grows smaller with each pass. Virtually all the advantages of a multipass encode is realized in the second pass. Data is gathered and recorded during pass 1, then the available bits are allocated in pass 2 based upon complexity and demand. Any additional passes can only take advantage of differences resulting in the preceding pass -- which is decreasing. I don't know of any in-depth analysis that has been but from my subjective analysis -- I can tell very little difference between 2 pass and 3 pass, and no difference between 3 and 4. The CCE manual itself implies it maxes out during the 4th pass...

You have to balance that against the time. Each pass takes an equal amount of time, so 4 passes takes twice as long as standard 2 pass, 6 three.... but 12 hours to do an encode as opposed to 2 will provide only minimal improvement in quality.

I remember the suggested maximum is 5 passes according to the CCE SP manual, but anyway it doesn't matter much. It means 6 passes with RB.
I agree that going above 3 passes with CCE (4 using RB) is only useful when you balance at the border of acceptable quality caused by low bitrate.

jdobbs

I guess the pass count depends on what definition of a pass you use... CCE doesn't count the first pass (why? I don't think I'll ever understand) but by every other encoder's definition (e.g. QuEnc) it would count.

Does it work now correctly with the CCE Basic 2.69.1.4? I'm using it myself on my new machine and I can't simply understand why I'm always getting 3.5 GB or 3.3 GB, although I set the CCETargetSectors to 2290000.

I'm using the MPEG2Dec3dg.dll from the sticky-attached mod-zip file.

Sorry I forgot to say that the input files are authored with DVD-Shrink 3.2 (so no changes to the structure are done by DVD-Rebuilder) and have a size of ~6 GB (usually no menu, just the film with 2-3 audio tracks).

Have you tested the resulting ~3,5 GB movie? Does it have all the audio streams you selected to keep?
I hope you are not measuring the content of your D2VAVS folder but the VIDEO_TS. :D

Hey that was not far off...I had to think about it twice. I do had a look at the D2VAVS folder, but it has only 2.6 GBs in it. I checked the film, it's playable, but I didn't look at the audio tracks. I will check that.

...but 1 GB additional data just have to be the 2 audio tracks, haven't they? But I will check that.

It's correct, audio's included in the 3.5 GB (both selected tracks).

Maybe the mpeg2dec3.dll? It's the 1010 version from the decodefixx110mod zip-file.

Would you please check the input video size and the output video size? Movie size minus audio streams size is enough for both. In other terms give me the original movie size and the size of the two audio streams.

Seems the 2.69.1.4 of cce basic is *really* unstable as the changelog of 2.69.1.10 says ("corrected unstable 2-pass"). With the 2.67 trial of the sp it works well again.

So keep your fingers away from cce basic 2.69.1.4 und update ASAP to .10.

Hello:

I am having problems with the final dvd file size. I have a resulting video that I converted from PAL. This conversion created a file size of ~6.5 Gb. When I run this file through DVD-RB, it produces a file of just under 2 Gb.

I have used DVD-RB before and never experienced this problem. It has always produced the correct file size (~4.3 Gb). This is the first time I am doing this with a PAL to NTSC converted dvd.

Some details:
Original dvd was PAL (interlaced) converted to NTSC (using Avisynth & TMPGEnc)
Created new vob set using IFOEdit (~6.5 Gb)
Ran movie using DVD-RB (I am using CCE SPT 2.66, 2-pass mode)

The final size created was ~2 Gb. I have not made any manual changes to the Expert options in RB. I'm not very good with Avisynth, so I thought I would check with the experts before I mess with the expert settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to keep as much quality as possible. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I converted this PAL to NTSC using TMPGEnc (Auto VBR, High Quality setting). The resulting vob set was ~7Gb. After DVD-RB, the file size was only 1.9 Gb. Hopefully, you can see what I may be doing wrong. Thanks again.

Ok. The compression ratio was 63.4% which makes sense (6.5 * 63.4% is a little over 4GB -- which is right). Now can you post the Rebuilder.ecl file?

It looks like your last segment (V01000800001001) is too long for DVD-RB to handle (over 2GB). Try this: In explorer arrange all the files in the D2VAVS directory by type (extension), and then highlight all the ones that end in .M2V. Next right click and show the properties. The total storate for the files should be somewhere in the 4GB range.

Then look at the length of V01000800001001.M2V. If it is over 2GB, it represents a single chapter that is 68 minutes long. That's beyond DVD-RB's capability. I'd suggest you break it up into at least a couple of chapters in the authoring package (I'm not familiar with TMPGENC authoring).

The total output is only 1.9GB because DVD-RB crashed on the last chapter and it was never added. I have to assume you got an error message during rebuild -- can you let me know what it was?

Unfortunately, I did not notice an error message. I ran the project overnight and used the auto shutdown. I checked RB and did not have the Suppress Warnings checked. The computer definitely shut itself down, so I assumed the process went smoothly. Is there any way I can find out the log from my last project in RB after the fact?

I will rerun the files as you suggest and see if that helps. I will report back the results. Thanks.

Look at the M2V file for that segment and see if it is larger than 2GB.

It's been a few days, but these files really do take a while to process. I have take a different approach. I use CCE to create the MPG file directly from the d2v. With the help of a bitrate calculator the PAL to NTSC conversion files were fine.

That was disc 1. Unfortunately, I think there is a problem with the files on the second disc. I'm not that good with TMPGEnc either, but I don't believe I can tell the program to break a segement into multiple chapters (at least I don't know how to). TMPGEnc will at least process the whole file, CCE will stop after 30 mins.

I will try some more to see if I can get rid of that over-sized segment so that RB can process it properly.

Hi jdobbs,

Thanks for your help. It turns out the problem came about because of the the MPG2DEC*.dll file I had installed.

I was using an avs script (from another thread) to convert the PAL to NTSC dvd. Following those instructions, I was using the latest version of DVD2AVI. That particular MPEG2DEC*.dll was different than the one required for DVD-RB. When I made sure that the correct dll was installed, I used CCE to create the d2v file directly and authored from there. As far as I can tell, the conversion went fine. I guess if I want to use RB, I need to make sure that I use the right version of DVD2AVI.

Thanks again. I can now go on to my next backup project.

Just to make sure I keep up with the times, the next version of DVD-RB will support DGDECODE.DLL as well as MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL.

Maybe I'm confused....
I thought the install of DVD-RB required MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL. I believe the latest DGINDEX (dgmpgdec1012) that I installed works with a different dll file (MPEG2DEC2.DLL). That is how I got CCE to work with the my d2v files, by swapping the correct dll file if I used DGINDEX.

Am I confused on this?

DGINDEX does work with a different dll which is DGDECODE.DLL -- as near as I recall MPEG2DEC2.DLL was for an older version that was included with DVD2AVI. MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL can be any one of at least 3 versions that came out in between the MPEG2DEC3.DLL and DGDECODE.DLL.

Be very careful in mixing .DLLs with versions, the results can be unpredictable.

DVD-RB works well with the MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL file from either the DECODEFIX100.ZIP or DECODEFIX110.ZIP -- and you shouldn't use any other decoder, nor should you run DGINDEX on a file that you plan to encode with DVD-RB. You don't want to use an earlier version because they lose frames -- and you don't want to use a newer one (with the current DVD-RB verstion) because the format of the D2V changed.

The next version of DVD-RB (v0.64) will support the newest Donald Graft (DG, Neuron2) version of DGDECODE.DLL. I've been testing it successfully for about a week now.
