View Full Version : Need help with disc that comes out slightly oversized

I am having problems with a disc that keeps turning out just slightly oversized. The final size is 4.85GB, just enough to were I can't burn it onto DVD-5 media (Nero complains it is oversize).

I am using DVD-RB .60b with CCE Basic. However, I have gotten the same results using QuEnc.

I have read through the threads on oversizing, and have tried setting the TargetSectors and CCETargetSectors to a lower value (2231400). I have also tried stripping space from extras, but that actually made the result slightly larger.

The disc has 2 separate VTS files, VTS_01 which is the main content and is 16:9, and VTS_02 which are the extras and is 4:3.

Here is the output from Phase I:

Transcoding...
-----------------
[22:42:17] Phase I, PREPARATION started.
- VTS_01: 3,533,431 sectors.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V file
-- Processed 385,015 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- VTS_02: 482,950 sectors.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V file
-- Processed 48,445 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 53.0%
- Overall Bitrate : 1,823Kbs
- Space for Video : 4,024,188KB
- HIGH/LOW/AVERAGE Cell Bitrates: 2,790/393/1,823 Kbs
[22:47:58] Phase I, PREPARATION completed in 5 minutes.

Anyone have any hints/suggestions?

From i have tried. nothing helped . if your useing cce 2.67.00.27 that was my problum, went down to .23 and my problums went away. Other then that i would try and use the files they list in the setup sticky, in case one of your files might be a slighty differnt version.

Try it with the latest RB (right now it is 0.61) and use RB-Opt v. 0.15 to tweak size. I have no problems with this configuration (AviSynth 2.5.5 and the DLLs listed at the sticky "DVD ReBuilder: Installation, Setup, and Usage" HERE (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74308) ).
I also suggest to remove all extras and unnecessary audio streams, because under 2000 kbps bitrate usually even CCE fails to give good quality encode.

I'll give it a shot, I have AviSynth 2.5.4 installed, guess it's time for an upgrade for that component.

A)Just take your output from RB and process through Shrink. Select "No Compresion" for the Main Movie, "Custom" for the Menu and then compress it to the maximum (remember RB does not compress menus) and "Automatic" for the extras.

B)If by the above Shrink projects an oversized output (above the 4464 MB Shrink defaults to), you can choose for eliminating some extras (Still images) or for compressing a little the Main Move (through "Custom"

C)If by A) the extras go to 100% (and the projected size is below the 4464 MB default), you can change the extras to "No Compression" and the Menu to "Automatic"

As Erdoke says, your average bitrate is low. If you want to keep the extras, I would suggest to check the "Half D1" option for extras, this will alocate more bitrate to the main movie.

Also some people would recommend to apply the Half D1 to all the VTS, even the main movie (it is selected in the Avisynth options) when you go to such low bitrates.

These are very useful suggestions, but first we should find out, why the oversize occured. Imagine doing this shrinking after every RB process...
Maybe it happened due to bad source maybe due to bad configuration of components. For long term usage of RB it is more useful to find the reasons.

I don't think it's the components, as I this is the first disk I have had this issue with, and I have backed up almost 50 at this point. I have the full version of CCE Basic (latest rev), and all my components are up to date except for AviSynth and DVD-RB (using .60b not .61)

I'll have to try playing with things when I get home but I think it just may be a weird source disc at this point.

Well, the results are that I have tried everything suggested, and nothing worked.

I upgraded by AviSynth to 2.55, and used RB-Opt to try to reduce the bitrate on some segments. No matter how I set RB-Opt, the size of the disc comes out the same - 4.85GB.

Now, I didn't try to *drastically* reduce the bit rate as a test, but it just seems weird to me that even lowering the bit rate by 700 points on 2-3 segments didn't change the disc size *at all*.

Weird. The disc by the way is Colonial House, which is the DVD of the special that aired last year. This is a 2 CD set, and both DVD's turn out to be the same size.

Have you unchecked the 'Autosized' option with every VobID in RB-Opt? Otherwise only the ratio of bitrates changes the final size not.
You can also tweak the final output size at 'Global Options'.

In RBOpt main screen, at the top, you find three figures:
- The percentage of your target size the selected bitrates will produce
- The projected output size in KB
- The projected output size in sectors. This figure should be very close to the CCETargetSector (or to the default 2236400)
Which are these figures.

Also, if you open the source DVD in Shrink and select "NO Compression" for all, what are the sizes for Menu, Main Movie and Extras reported in the Left panel, and what the sizes of the Video for each (reported in the top right panel, besides the sliding rule. you have to highlight the selection to get the info for it)
