View Full Version : Alternative Player for streaming RealMedia?

I use Windows Media Player Classic 6.4.8.2 as my default media player. It is supposed to be able to play RealMedia files, and I have it set up as the default player for such files. However, when I click on a .rm or .ram file on the web, MPC appears to open the file, but it never plays back. Any suggestions on how to make it work?

Of course I could use RealMedia's own free player. But it is bloated, large, full of ads, etc.

If it is impossible to get MPC to play streaming RealMedia correctly, which other alternative players would people suggest for such files?

MPC has not been updated in a long time. It's a great program, but I wonder when bugs in it will be fixed, if ever?

Media Player Classic is unable to play Realmedia streams by its own, MPC needs the appropiate dlls.

You could use Real Alternative (http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm), although it does not give you 100% Real compatibility. Which means some .rm won't play, especially streaming.

You can check out the Real thread on this board (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68399) for tips about not letting RP10 getting out of (your) control.

Then again if you really don't like the real Real player ;), Real Alternative will be better than nothing. But keep in mind that Real Alternative is not 100% legal outside Russia. ;) (I may be wrong with that, tho I think it's very unlikely).
