I have noticed that some of my older MPEG-1 files stopped playing properly in any DShow based players. What happens is a file will start playing for a bit but the slider will reach the end too fast. No, it doesn't speed up the video itself. It plays it normally up to a point but then reaches the end of its "slider line" before the video is supposed to be over. After that, the sound still keeps on playing but the video is stuck at whatever frame it was when the slider reached the end. Almost like those frozen frames in the old DivX 3.11a, except with the slider stuck at the very end of its line. For example, in a 5-minute MPEG-1 video, it will play for about 54 seconds normally, with sound and all, but the slider acts as if the video itself is only 54 seconds, even though the players show the total length as 5:00 minutes, so it stops after 54 seconds, while the sound keeps on playing till the end.
However, when I play such files in PowerDVD4XP, they play fine. Also, I tried sending them to a friend to test, and they play fine in any DShow based players. And open correctly in TMPGEnc for muxing and demuxing. When I try to demux it in TMPGEnc, it will demux exactly same part that is playable in DShow based players. For example, it only demuxes 54 seconds out of that 5:00 minute video, then simply ends without any errors, as if it finished its job perfectly.
If I try to open it in VCDGear to fix the errors, it simply quits to desktop immediately.
I'm still not sure what the hell is wrong with it because I have other MPEG-1 files that play fine from start to finish and they too use DShow filters.
There's obviously something wrong with my system or the filters themselves because the files play and demux perfectly on my friends' computers. And they also play perfectly in PowerDVD, which uses its own filters. Moreover, they played without problems on my system before. But something happened at some point and I can't seem to track down exactly what it was.
Any ideas on how to fix or re-register those filters without having to re-install Windows? I'm not even sure if registering them again would help. They are already registered because they kick in whenever they're needed. Or perhaps something else is causing this behaviour? It's almost like the video filter has developed a certain play-length limit on certain files it's picky about.
I'm using the latest drivers and patches, including SP2 (which I just installed). However, it started happening before SP2. Running on a P4 2.4 with GeForce4 Ti4200.
