VHS and TAPE

I was thinking the other day about the good analouge old days.
VHS and these tape, cassets for freestyle etc.

What kind of compression type is it? Something that match todays compressions? Can I compare to VCD or some other lossity compression?

VHS is roughly equal to 352x576 video, but with far less chroma bandwidth, and jittery, jumpy pictures with unstable scanlines that go all over the place.

i don't miss it at all :)

that said, analog BetaCam was and still is very competitive. not a patch on DigiBeta, but pretty damn good.

the best of analog as i understand it was LaserDisc, but that had it's own problems (huge discs, very short play times).

you can't really compare compression techniques with analog storage - the quality sacrifices made by each medium are so different that a comparison is all but meaningless (especially with Audio).

for example, an mp3 that sounds exactly like the original might have a signal-to-noise ratio many times lower, but the added noise is intelligently hidden away from prying ears.
