View Full Version : DVD players _ Avi - Wmv _ Format Requirements?

I have wanted to convert avi files (usually DivX or Xvid) to a format that can be put on a VCD or SVCD for a while (maybe 60 gigabytes worth), but didn't want to spend the time doing it; in addition I enjoy the smaller file size, and some of the videos play better in their Xvid format.

Just the same, I have to save the files off the computer, to make more space (It's amazing how fast 200gbs can go!)

With DVD players coming on the market, that can play avi's, I would like to just save them directly to DVDs now and be able to play them when I get the equipment. So here are my questions:

Does anyone know for sure, what format the Avis or other file types, like Wmv, Xvid, will be OK in (Video & Audio codecs requirements)?

I've seen it written to just put the files on a DVD as a data disk, but is that confirmed as correct:

* Does the disk need any particular formatting, as in similar to a DVD, or UDF or ISO?

* Will a particular file structure be needed? Root dir? SubDirs allowed? Video_Folder, Special Folders?

* BitRates, FPS, resolutions, etc?

For example, you can burn mp3s directly to data disk, and use any sub dir system you want, but it seems that bitrates below 64 don't play and at 96 get a whined out sound (at least on My Dvd player).

I am also doing camcorder captures (usb - analog), and capture to uncompressed avi, before encoding, to get my best quality footage, and then after have to encode. It would be nice to be able to encode to Xvid or DivX, then just save directly to DVDs.

:confused:
One other thing that has always bugged me is how on a Dvd player you can play vcd & svcds and directly recorded mp3 without a structure, yet you can't just take an mpeg file (1 or 2) burn it onto a DVD and play it. Or why you just can't make a (S)VCD that is larger and burn it to DVD. You would think that being the tech exists to play these files (in one form or another) exists on the players, that one should be able to access it.

If there is a way to do this (without encoding to vobs) or to trick the dvd to play these, I would really like to know

An additional question I have is what, if any, menu structure could be used on these AVi type DVDs?
