View Full Version : Toshiba Multi-Drive burning too slowly

Just got a new Toshiba notebook, Satellite M35-S456. Drive is a Matshita UJ-820S, rated 4x for DVD+R and DVD-R.

Nero Info and DVDecryptor show supported speeds 1x, 2x, 4x for Ritek branded G03's, discs we use successfully on other machines.

However, although Nero, CopyToDVD, DVDShrink, all say they're burning at 4x, the process is taking 20+ min. Clearly the Toshiba is burning at 2x.

Also, oddly, I tried some Ritek G04's in the notebook, and Nero Info and DVDecryptor show supported speeds of that disc type as 1x and 2x only!

This same drive gives a power calibration error on Philips 48x CDR's, but burns Maxell 52x CD's okay at rated 16x speed.

(The notebook does burn at all rated speeds on all kinds of discs when using an external DRU-500A, so I doubt it's software related.)

DMA is on both controllers, machine has 1 gig RAM & 1.7 gig Dothan chip.

Do you think I've got a bum Matshita drive, or are these drives just fussy?

If the latter, any recommendations for particular DVD brands that will burn at full speed?

Thanks.
