This may have been answered already but I could not find a post on this.

My question is does dvd shrink and nero recode compress audio and video on long movies lets say 2h:30m. Or is the audio demuxed and left alone then remuxed at the end.

It may just be my ears or just to much testing but when I did LOR fellowship it seemd to me that the ac-3 sound quality of the copy was not as good as the original. I tried it in both shrink and nero recode so If anyone has an answer for both shrink and recode I would sure appreciate it.

Well im about 99 percent sure Shrink does not touch the Audio. Not sure about Recode. I think you may be hearing things dude.

No transcoders (including Shrink and recode) alter the audio.

Thanks for the replies. Must be my ears playing tricks on me then or the hours of testing I've been doing on shrink, recode and rebuilder lately.

What have you found when comparing cce and shrink? I have personally noticed that cce does take the sharpness out a little more than shrink does at lesser compression ratios... but cce definately does the high action scenes better when you have to compress more.

I had actually found rebuilder to be sharper but pan scenes are not as smooth as shrink and I had some audio dropouts on LOR. rebuilder also did not handle interlaced video very well such as tv shows. It had very bad jurky pan scenes. I found shrink to have a somewhat blotchy picture on the longer movies but over all gave consistant results for both progressive and interlaced materal. My recommendation is use shrink on movies under 2 hours and rebuilder on movies over 2 hours. Both are excellent programs and if the audio problems can be worked out and it handled interlaced video better rebuilder would be the leader of encoding programs. Nero recode produced pretty much the same results as shrink. This was however not an indepth professional test like some of what I read in the forums. I based my opinions on what was pleasing to my eye on a 46" rear projection hdtv.

Yea Im doing Band of Brothers right now and I cant hardly even tell the difference between the version I did with Rebuilder and the version I did with Shrink. But the compression ratio is only like 75% after taking out all but the 5.1 DD eng track. That was the first disc. It will be interesting to see a comparison in the later discs when there is even more action. But at these compression ratios i think i will be fine using shrink throughout the whole series.

That's an excellent series to test with let me know how the later disks come out expecially the disks where they are in the woods and the trees are exploding all around them. You should keep the DTS tracks they are far better then the ac-3 tracks in this particular series.

Yea I would like to but I dont have a DTS receiver, and I would rather have that extra space for the main movie video. I can always redo them if/when i get a good receiver. Im doing disc 3 right now. That is the one with Bastogne (the ep. with all the exploding trees... or was that ep. 7? cant recall) Either way I will let you know how it turns out.
