suggested streaming codec

I love real but it has to have a server. I looking for one that will directly stream of a http, or ftp like wmv,mp3,mpeg,asf etc.

MP3, OGG, RMVB and WMV/ASF can

how can i get real to stream without the server? i tryed the unix hack with notepad to a .ram but didnt work for rmvb. Would mkv stream?

There are several streaming solutions. Darwin streaming server and .mp4.. or you can look to an open source project like VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org/).

VideoLAN need 2000kbps to have DVD-like quality. KInda hard on DSL lines :D

it might use ffmpeg, still if you dont want to live stream you can use any mpeg-4 codec (like divx5, xvid aso...) to encode your content to .mp4 and than stream with the free tools provided by apple, mpeg4ip, videolan, vitookit aso... (read more about streaming mpeg-4 content in my mp4 faq i link to in my sig)

streamed .mp4 can be played in quicktime, realplayer by default and in wmp9 after installing a free plugin from dicas if i remember it right
of course other players like videolan, osmo4 and wmp4player... (maybe also mplayer?) handle it too by default

plus

dont forget that with ogg theora/vorbis there is a streaming solution existing which is 100% free of any payments to any patent/license holders or whatever
so if you want to be 100% on the legally save side you should think about using .ogg too

Right. VLC has a streaming server built in, using FFMPEG MPEG2 encoder. It can stream any format it can read ( even OGM, MKV ) to another client. Of course, it gets decoded first, encoded to MPEG2 and is then streamed as a MPEG PS file.

About the bitrate you need, 2 mbps seems to be the absolute minimum to achieve usable quality ...

But you like to stream a live audio/video, a realtieme trancoded audio/video or a precompresed video/audio.

in the live stream o realtime trancoded file yoy need a server like ffmpeg, shouthcast, realserver (helix server)....

but if a prerecorded file you can play directly using a comon http server, but not all player suport this, in teh other hand the most used players suport it.

PD. I like P2P streaming like used by PerrCast (http://www.peercast.org/)
