View Full Version : InstantCopy produces invalid files?

I recently discovered that InstantCopy (8.3.0.4 and 8.2.0.0)
produces incorrect files. Or at least it looks like it does
because DVD Shrink (all Versions I tried) refuses to read
DVDs created with InstantCopy.

I tested this with different DVDs and with 'Main Movie only'
and 'Complete Disk' mode – all with the same result.
Interesting to know that this problem does not exists with
IC version 7.0.

Does anybody know what's wrong with the files? Does it
affect DVD Shrink only or other software too? And most
important – does this 'bug' prevent the DVD to work on
certain stand-alone players?

Well I know that the bug is not in the earlier versions of IC 8 (8.0.15 or something). I would say try playing it with the DVD play button in IFOEdit. Also you could try running it through dvd remake and not getting rid of anything just processing it. See if that doesnt allow shrink to read the files. Also you could just go ahead and burn to a dvd rw and see if test if it works that way. Not sure why this is happening (I only have the older version right now.) but the above are a few methods that you might try. oh and just as a note. Just because shrink cant open the files doesnt necessarily mean the files are bad. But I would test this out before burning a final copy.

Hi and welcome to the forums ;)

Instantcopy has never been the best at producing compliant DVD's especially when removing content :(. Different version of IC7 worked better than others but I have forgotten what each version did or didnt do. IC8 also has it drawbacks in this area also as I've seen the IFO's it produces and again in some cases they are very dubious

so the simple answer is yes to most of your questions, the DVD's will probably have problems with other softwares and certain standlalones

have you tried feeding them back into IC also. It also sometimes refuses to reload it's own output :D

in some cases you could use Ifoedit to fix what IC produces but this is beyond most peoples capabilities and time constraints

to do a movie only but use IC for shrinking then the best thing to do is rip the movie only with DVDShrink's reauthor set to No Compression. Feed the ripped files into IC and just reduce it as normal. Doing it this way will have a far greater success than using IC by itself as IC has very little to mess up ;)

there is a handy player called Mark's DVD Tray player and that is very good at finding non compliant DVD's. This player barfs on playback if anything is wrong unlike PowerDVD etc that just play them most times regardless of navigational errors

I wonder if a mock strip in IFOEdit wouldn't fix this also. Or you could just use DVD Shrink instead of IC. Just throwing out ideas. Also we may be jumping the gun here as your dvd player may play the movie just fine.

Thank's for the ideas. I checked both types of DVDs
(main / complete) on my player and with my old WinDVD 2000.
Both disks play ok.

Using IfoEdit to analyze, I think the error is in the
VTS_VOBU_ADMAP table. There is a large gap in the
offset before the last entry. (see attached image)
Does this mean anything to you?

Using other tools to repair the ifo files is very
time consuming. I would rather like to avoid this.
Any idea on what percentage of players the DVD
(unfixed) DVDs will work?

Try using IfoEdit, load the VIDEO_TS.IFO, press Get VTS Sectors, then VOB Extras button and select only "Correct Vob-Unit Navigational packets.." and "Correct Original IFO Files". IfoEdit will correct this problem for you. After that I have been able to load the output of IC into Shrink with no problems :)
