This might be a thread for the beginner's forum, but anyways...

Is it possible to mux real video with ac3 in matroska (or any other container)? How?

mkvmerge from the mkvtoolnix package. The mmg.exe is a GUI for it.

I produced an RV clip that mkvmerge wouldn't open, saying there was no content in it

(It played in realplayer)

Oh well, back to the testing. Thanks!

Try using Media Player Classic from Gabest :)

It doesn't want to play real media at all since I installed realplayer. Mind you, I had to uninstall real alternative to get realplayer to work.

realalternative is evil. I wonder why people still install it :o

Could you elaborate? Why evil?

As he pointed out above, it tends to break things, particularly RealPlayer actually working.

bot: in general mkvmerge (mmg) should be able to mux RV + AC3 without any problems. Media Player Classic should also be able to play your RV as long as you have RealPlayer installed. There is a big UNLESS though, and that is unless you created a SureStream file. This is a file with multiple bitrates embedded. Neither realmediasplitter (nor mkvmerge) can handle this filetype. It is not useful unless you want to stream your file via a RealServer. That's all I can think of for now. If this is not the problem, let me know, and I will PM you a location you can upload your problematic file to.

IMHO the new RealPlayer is evil. I woudn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

And what exactly does RealAlternative break (other than the "famous" RealPlayer)?
