We've just released a beta version of our new DivX Browser Plugin on DivX Labs

All I can say, that my machine crashed badly by starting the trailer in IE 6.0.
It's an older machine with Win98 installed. All patches, directx9c,
stable running for a looooong time. Just my fool around machine.
Freezin and diein...
Only a hardwire reset possible:D
Maybe I should give it a try on my XP machine, but still I wonder.
Anyway I like the idea watching Divx in a web browser window...

Thanks for releasing your beta plug-in DivX.

I've just finished viewing both your trailers via an 750K ISP connection over here in the UK and I'm quite impressed.

Playback was not completely smooth (probably an 1Mb connection would have faired better) but image quality was very good.

Can you provide detailed information about the clips posted so I can compare the results against other formats?

That's pretty brave, attempting to 'stream' a file with of a combined average bitrate of around 1400Kbps!

How is the file streamed? What container are you using?

The reason I ask is because the file does not appear to be stored on your PC anywhere!

Yep it would seem you are correct. I had a look at the web page source code and it does indeed point to the BourneSupremacy.avi file (which includes B-VOP)!

I quite like the fact that the DivX plug-in works totally on its own. Without you having to have any DivX direct-show filters etc installed.

It might be helpful if DivX could create links to encodes with a slightly lower bit-rate and/or resolution?

1st one plays fine for me, the 2nd jumps..., anyway i would really like to see this 'plugin' to be crossbrowser (hint: firefox) in the near future. i tested it a little, and xvid seems to play fine too (after i change fourCC to DIVX).

now, this will jump based on someones bandwidth i guess? (i mean there is no 'bandwidth detection-play the correct clip' options (which is not bad i guess)?)

It would appear this "plug-in" runs under ActiveX, so I'm not sure whether it can be considered as actually being a, "plug-in" - Others will have to comment about this!

Anyway, what ever it is, it does appear to allow streaming of Mpeg4/MP3 in ".avi"... which is an interesting concept...

I think an open source equivalent to this wouldn't be too difficult. The only hurdle to clear is the fact that indexes in AVI files are at the end of the file, so you have to build your own index, in realtime.

I would imagine no one in the open source side has done it because most of us want to see this container die :-p

I've just added a DivX video only 'streaming' file to my web site.

It works pretty well provided you have the "plug-in" installed...

EDIT: The clip is only around 19 seconds long. Just press the play button to start!

Also,

While I understand that everybody likes to do this differently. I wonder whether anyone has considered creating a DivX web media player, based on QuikTime's version?

What I like about it, is its neatness and overall simplicity. I think the scroll bar and function buttons use less than 20 vertical pixels.

EDIT: Is nobody out there biting? Is there nobody here that can create a DivX web player based on the QuickTime web player?

I had a look at the other web players. The one modelled on MediaPlayer Classic/WMP6.4 looks pretty good and has the obligatory slider... but I reckon it's a little fussy for displaying video on an web page!
