My system burns Ritek G04's fine, at 4x speed: Windows XP Pro, Pioneer DVR-107D (firmware 1.10), RecordNow-DX (bundled with burner). I just bought some G05's, which are suppposedly 8x, and it only burns them at 4x. RecordNow-DX doesn't allow specific speed settings (only min, max, etc). DVDInfoPro shows the G05's to be
Media code/Manufacturer ID RITEKG05
Media Id Code Speed Unknown
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
Q: Do I have a problem here? Any suggestions for what to do to get this thing to burn at 8x? THANKS.

It means that your drive refuses to burn them at 8x, probably because it thinks they are crap.

I think alexnoe means that your drive doesn't have a writing strategy for that disc @ 8x. Flash your firmware to 1.18, everything I've read says that your drive requires that to write those discs faster than 4x.

You can find firmware for your drive here: http://gradius.rpc1.org/

I would recommend using the one that just has RPC-1 and ripping unlock... but if you're brave you can attempt to use the one that has the 8x For All media hack.

Thanks for the input, there, alexnoe -- and for the relatively gracious response, int 21h, as well. Turns out the flash upgrade did the trick.

w/NEC 3500 and Liggy's 2.27 beta8 I burn them at 12@ flawlessly.

Here's a Kprobe scan of them!!!

... Pioneer DVR-107D (firmware 1.10), RecordNow-DX (bundled with burner)...
Out of curiosity what version of recordnow-dx came with your drive?

RecordNow DX 4.60, build 450B47a.408.032(SSS)

Slightly off-thread, perhaps: Lately the drive seems to be consistently trashing any -RW media I throw into it. Initially it doesn't even see the media. If I put in a used disc (already formatted, etc) it sees, and will burn, the disc, but the result is a trashed disc that the drive will no longer see. Grrrr. Dunno yet if it's a media problem or a burner problem. I moved the burner from one machine to another, prior to this problem appearing.
