View Full Version : DVD Shrink and Region Change Limit?

Can anybody help me with this one out there? I sometimes use DVD Shrink (using 3.2) to backup those discs which are my dearest in order to avoid unintentional scratches, specially when friends want to borrow(he, he). Couple of days ago a friend wanted to borrow one which is out of print and I started to back it up. It is a different region from the one my discs ususally are set, and before the job, Shrink said it could not read it and needed to change the region first but that my recorder allowed only four changes of region and asked if I wanted to continue. At the time I did not worry much and made the backup, but now I´m worried about such issue. Why is that? Is there anything I can do to avoid this "region limitation change" from the recorder? In time, I use an LG 4120b.
Please, help me guys.

Hello beto666. :)

Try deselecting "Check RPC2 drive region code when opening a DVD" in DVD Shrink "Edit >> Preferences >> File I/O" menu.

P.S: "Everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.". ;)

Way to go ddlooping. But then I got the message depicted below. If I disable RPC2 then I have the region limit changing message again, this time I have only three changes left for the recorder. Don't you think it's better to use a region free prog - like DVD Region Free or AnyDVD?
Thanks again for your time.

Yep, you could either use a region-free software, or flash your burner with a region-free firmware. ;)

Of course!! Not only that, if you use for instance DVD Region+CSS Free, you could directly (without ripping before) use another program to do the transcoder job, like Nero Recode 2, Clone DVD or Instant Copy.
That programs (DVD Region+CSS Free or Any DVD as well) have the virtue to shoot the signal to any video player or transcoder, not only Region Free but decrypted already... If you run this programs on the background, you will see in the DVD Shrink's preview window "Not encrypted".
I think it is a nice tool.

You could use a free program called DVD43 v1.4. This removes the region just like AnyDVD. It is left running in the system tray while Shrink is running.

It only works with Win XP or 2000 though.

Thank you guys. Everything is running smoothly now. Opted for using DVD Region CSS Free. I read in one of the forums suggested that what the software does is bypass, thus, fooling the hardware about the region it believes it is set to. And ddlooping, is there any harm in flashing my burner? Read that the OS or software still retains the counters for regions, so I think it's better to use a region free soft instead. What's the difference 'tween RPC1 and RPC2?
Thank you again everybody. Excellent help.
Keep on rockin'!

You're welcome. :)

Well, I have flashed a couple of drives and never had problems with them.
Having said that some have not been as lucky, so it might be better to stick with a region-free software. ;)

Yeah! Better stick to the good ol' region free ccs stuff. Besides, it works fine in the background.
Thanx again.

you can use ANYDVD for www.slysoft.com or dvdregionfree both will do the job. I like ANYDVD little better for ripping so DVD2ONE and cloneDVD you run right form the DVD no need to rip to the hard drive. I use DVDregionfree 3.01 it did rip then upgrade to a new version would not work but also upgrade ANYDVD yesterday had some problems went back to 3.8.1.2 so I alway stuck with ANYDVD but might try DVDregionfree again.

Well, DVD Region Free or DVD Region+CSS Free work exacly as you think they should be. You don't need to ripp the movie to your HD, you can do the ripp process directly from the original DVD.
Also, in the settings, you can choose the programs you like to work together with... you just need to give the route to the exe file of the program you need, like: WinDVD, PowerDVD, DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero Recode 2, Clone DVD, Instant Copy, DVD2ONE etc...
Sometimes, early versions of DVD Region Free could not recognize new DVD drives, in that case, one must to actualize it.

I flashed a patched firmware on my Pioneer A06 because it does not only make it region-free, it also makes it rip faster. Original firmware limits ripping speed to 2x on this drive, the patched FW unlocks it and it rips 4-8x CLV on dual layer and 5-10x CLV on single layer discs.

I haven't had any problems with the firmware yet but I saved a lot of time with the better ripping speed.

btw. for ripping I suggest you always use DVDDecrypter - never had a problem with it (I rip to ISO, then mount the ISO with Daemon Tools, so I can use the image just like a real DVD only with PUOs, Region Code and encryption removed)

If you are using Shrink 3.2. It can open ISO images directly so there is no need to mount them first (File menu - open disc image).

Yes, I believe you... if you are lucky enough that your DVD Recorder is flasheable. Unfortunatelly it is not my case... or at least, not at the moment.
That's why I think it is good to use one of that Region Free programs.
Greetings! :D
