Just out of curiousity (and in a forum with a name like this an obvious question :) )

How many of you upgraded their graphics card to be able to run Doom3 ??
And how many upgraded their complete system....

I did, but I could not afford a Nvidia 6800, so I settled for a FX5700 for now.... :D

That game isn't really worth it. Maybe Half Life 2  Maybe

i got a R9800 pro to replace my R900 pro, this was to prepare for Thief 3, and i'm very glad i have it now so i can play Bloodlines.

I'm keeping my almost 1.5-year old Radeon 9700, as there is no reason to upgrade. It is fast enough for Doom 3, but I don't care because I find a game where you walk around dark corridors without seeing anything while only having a flash light (lazer pointer would be a better description) very entertaining. I'm going back to Duke3D, and while it is older, it is still the better game.

I got a 6800 GT but not for Doom3... It was about time to get rid of that Ti 4400, and compared to that one the 6800 GT is a monster...

4400 rocks. More than two years old and I can still play most games. Well, DOOM3-type not really ;)

I've heard the new NVIDIA's suck (FX....). If I were to buy a new card I would go for ATI.

True, true... I must admit I upgraded before seeing the game. I like Doom3 a lot, but I must admit the impact is not nearly as big as the first doom versions or the quake series had. Still, since I didn't shell out €500 for a 6800 I'm not disappointed. :)

There is something fundamentally wrong with a videocard that pulls over a 100 Watt and needs two dedicated powerlines just to keep it running. To me, that spells 'rushed to market to soon....'

serious??

wow, i'd rather just bi-amp my speakers if i were going to be using that much juice.

half my mainboard is already completely fried from just an old GeForce 2 MX400 (my soundcard fizzes whenever i move the mouse).

hmmm.... i always wondered why viddy cards couldn't be utilized to help do offline processing as well. it'd be awesome to upgrade a graphics card and at the same time get dual-proc power (i'm sure the current line of graphics cards outperform my p3 733 CPU by a large factor).

both nvidia and ati mid to high end cards can play the majority of games fine(obviously the detail and picture size may need varying). with opengl games nvidia is generally faster and with directx games ati is generally slightly faster. does that make the games unplayable on the other cards ? no.

so lets NOT make this an nvidia versus ati thread ok ? :D

I didnt upgrade anything as my happy super-gaming times are over.
Two of my close friends have however purchased doom, and one of those has bought one of the more expensive video cards (costed about 300 € if i recall correctly, i forgot the name though)

Personally though I was rather disappointed at what I saw in Doom. Ok, the graphics were quite nice, but a real new milestone? Would have expected a LOT more.

I bought an Ati 9800 Pro some time before DooM 3. It runs well after some patches and stuff. I liked the game at the beginning but later in the game it is just more of the exact same, so i stopped playing. Also I find the soundeffects really crap quality :(

I got a 6800GT for my new barebone, only to find out that it would use too much joice (system temp was 60C in idle mode) and the system was unstable as hell. Since no 6600GT cards are currently available, I settled for a 5700 now for the time being (but my SN95G5 is still unstable, a lot less than before and a lot less hot, but by the looks of it I still have to return it to the shop :(

I did not. Doom3 killed my interrest to play games. Waiting for LH2 :D

I know that doesn't fit my name, but I found Doom3 rather borning.. sure there's the alien-like claustrophobic feeling, but I liked the "kill everything that moves and them some" attitude of the previous games of that serious. I also found myself remembering HalfLife when playing Doom3 (another game that will never make my best-list). The most fun 3d shooter I played in the past few year was Serious Sam. Who cares about realism, all those games are not realistic anyway, so you can as well carry a 1000 round ammo belt and a truckload of rockets around with you and blow up more than 1000 enemies per level.

Sounds like i should try "serious sam" once. I was also rather disappointed by doom3. Well i knew it would not be the happy fragging as in Q3A, but still. It made me so much realise, i can _only_ enjoy a shooter game when it exactly does not try to be realistic. I hate the gun the army forces on me (to store it in my flat even gaah), the "realism" shooters like CS, unreal, halo or whatever else could never keep me playing more than one day before they bore my or i'm too much disgusted. But running around in Q3A with the rocket launcher or gauntlet is fun because it is completly off reality.

back to topic, i bought a FX5700 before i could play doom3. I probably would not have bought it only for that game, it was more like a trigger because i alredy thought i could use something a bit more modern so i could play some of the newer games. But actually, for video overlay i think it looks worse than the old radeon 7500 did. Someone in another thread complained about catalyst ..you should see the shitty software that comes with a Asus FX5700 first :) The panel it integrates into the display properties uses totally unreadable abbreviations and pops sort of a sidepanel to navigate it. It is close to unusable.
Then there is this oh so great app to overclock/control the fan. It is autoloaded with startup of windows, but as it is IE based (YES you read right :/) it makes windows boot time increase by 5-10 seconds and last but not least it crashed consequently after running half a day. Obviously i deinstalled it pretty soon, even tho its functions were handy.
I'm not a fan of neither brand. They both make decent cards, but the additional software for both sucks about equally and the cult made out of 2fps or a million triangles/s more on one or the other game is completely beyond my understanding.

not here it isnt. perfectly readable and easily usable. :)

back on topic though.

ye when i hear doom3 was basically meant to be a remake of doom1 with better gfx and ai i thought hmm could be good for some quick mindless blasting. after seeing at a freinds place though i think i will pass on it. definatly the most boring of the series. maybe if they had concentrated a bit more on the gameplay instead of the gfx it could have been goodoh well at least others may take the engine now and make something better from it. :D

I also have an Asus GF5700 card, but I've stopped using manufacturer specific drivers ages ago.. since I've been using NVIDIA cards since the Riva TNT I've always been able to rely on NVIDIA's reference drivers.

Serious Sam was meant to be a trilogy.. I hope we'll get to see the 3rd part eventually (not like Duke Forever which takes forver (but DN3D was a great game to play - they also focused on story somewhat, but it was a fun story.. and the Plutonium pack made it even more fun)

I think ID intended it to be an engine showcase, and in the next few years we will see some terrific games based on the Doom3 engine.

I must admin that right now I am playing doom1 again (using zdoom) :)

As to the power consumption: 100W was a bit exaggerated, it's 'only' 73W

See here (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/ati-vs-nv-power_10.html) for a nice comparison between cards.

To be sure neither cards 'suck', but last time I checked there were few mid-level options for nVidia. You could either go high-end with the 6800 series, or step back to the previous generation 5x00 series. If your looking to spend up to $200US you have limited options until the 6600 gets out.

On Doom3, I was disappointed. I played on my old ATI 8500, so of course the graphics didn't overwhelm me, but I was impressed my card could handle it even at the lowest settings. But I found the gameplay repetitive and frustrating at times.

@unmei: which card do you have? mine is the V9570TD (from Asus), and I'm having some serious overlay issues. Basically I get horizontal stripes in the picture (both DivX/XviD and DVD), not always but frequently. And for some stupid reason, since I switched to this card (had both a 6800GT and 4600TI in the same case before, both of which had no problem), I no longer get my display's native resolution (1920x1200), but only 1600x1200. I can add the 1920x1200 res manually, but switching to it just gives me a black screen. I've been having trouble all over since last Saturday. So much for selling your PC before you're 200% sure the new one is 101% working.

I'll get a 6600GT card as soon as they're out. They ought not to tax my PSU too much.

i also have the V9570TD, and yes luminance stripes in the overlay. But mine are vertical, about every 8 or so pixel, and i only see them on anime, with unicolor surfaces that are relatively bright, but not too bright. I guess then the luma is around 3/4 (corresponding to 192/192/192 gray), the chroma is not affected and seems also it doesn't affect the stripes, only it's brightness triggers it. Further the stripes are not that accentuated ..i think when it were output to a CRT you would not see them at all.

I don't know about the resolution, i have a TFT with native 1280x1024 and i operate the card only at that resolution.

[edit] I found an occurance ..it might be a little darker than 3/4 ..usual "skin" color doesn't trigger it, but on this one in the shadow i can see it. Also it is rather 4 colums dark, 4 bright (than 8).

They are not that great with 4x AntiAliasing, which was the main reason for me to buy a 6800GT (plus their OpenGL performance compared to ATI).

last time I checked there were few mid-level options for nVidia. You could either go high-end with the 6800 series, or step back to the previous generation 5x00 series.
considering the 5xxx series has PS2.0 and is directx 9.0 there is no current or near future game you cant play. infact ati's latest cards also only do PS 2.0(PS 3.0 planned for next generation apparently) so whats the problem feature wise ?
speed ? well thats why i said mid range aswell. look at the prices of 5700 ultra and even 5900 non ultra. they are about mid range and give pretty good performance wouldnt you say ?
obviously when the 6600 series is released they should fit in to the mid range roughly(higher end). then you will start to see some real bargain priced 5700's/5900's. in fact the non ultra 5700 is getting awful close to budget card sort of price now. :)

and I'm having some serious overlay issues
have you tried stepping back a driver version or 2 (if using the latest) ? or you could even try one of the beta versions floating around. some bugs are chip specific such as only may occur on the 5700 or even a particular brand/model.

Upgraded from a Radeon9200 to a 9800XT, but not only for Doom3 !!!

Was a bit disappointed by Doom3...

Only the first hours where great -> Mainly caused through the nice graphics !!!

Gah...

Now Im waiting for HalfLife² and Quake4 (and DN4Ever...) !!!

By then, I waste my time with UT2003 InstaGib matches as usually...

IIRC the one of GTA ViceCity was cool...

I did get a new computer recently, but it was just because I wanted another computer, not really for games (although since getting it I have been wanting to try out some of these newer games). I got a radeon 9800pro with it, which I figured should be able to handle anything I want to play, even if I don't get to set the graphics to the highest quality.

Anyone ever play "Reaction Quake"? It's a Quake 3 mod (multiplayer only), and I have to say it is waaaaaay more fun than any game I've ever played. The graphics aren't as impressive as something like Doom 3, but for pure gameplay, I can't imagine anything more fun. There was the same mod for Quake 2, called "Action Quake 2", and that, even with the so-so graphics of Quake 2, is still more fun, IMO, than anything else out there (besides Reaction Quake).

packed up my whole barebone and everything goes back to the shop today.. that leaves me for the first time since mid 2000 when I moved to another country without a PC at home. I'm literally doomed now.

I've been playing a couple rounds of UT2k4 (you wouldn't believe that since I bought it I never got around to playing it).. it's quite fun and my card (the one that will have to be replaced because the overlay is unacceptable) doesn't have too much trouble keeping up.
