ESPRE Solutions Purchases the Patented Lightning Strike Video CODEC from Video Partners, Inc.
Provides ESPRE with ''Best in Class'' Video and Image Compression Technology

Plano, TX (September 13, 2004) - ESPRE Solutions, a Dallas-based technology company, with a revolutionary and patented video compression technology, today announced the purchase of the Lightning Strike(TM) Video CODEC from Video Partners, Inc.

Prior to the purchase, ESPRE Solutions owned a source code license to the revolutionary technology with a non-exclusive right to modify the source code. This partnership locks down the intellectual property that has proven to be far superior to that offered by standard MPEG compression algorithms. In fact, in a recent side-by-side comparison conducted by ESPRE Solutions, the LSVX CODEC not only consistently out-performed Microsoft and Real Networks, but also the encoding time was significantly less using the LSVX encoder.

"Purchasing the LSVX CODEC was a very strategic decision for ESPRE Solutions. What clearly separates ESPRE and our products from standard MPEG solutions is the unique Wavelet compression and video quality of the LSVX CODEC," said Pete Ianace, CEO of ESPRE Solutions.

In a recently published white paper, ESPRE compared the LSVX CODEC to Windows Media 9 (WM9) and Motion Picture Experts Group v. 4 (MP4). Andy Wilson, VP of Product Management and Design, who oversaw the test states that, "LSVX provides near DVD quality video at lower bit rates than either MP4 or WM9. Furthermore, LSVX uses 12% less CPU power during playback (decoding) than MP4 and 30% less than WM9. Add to this greater color range, crisper detail, and a 50% decrease in both encoding times and CPU usage over WM9 and you have a hands-down winner in both quality and efficiency. The unique efficiency of the LSVX CODEC has let ESPRE be the first to product two-way video conferencing on a wireless PDA."

ESPRE Solutions will be demonstrating its LSVX streaming encoder, plus its other five applications at Streaming Media West in Santa Clara, CA next month (Oct. 26-28, BOOTH 111).

All i could find was that in 2001 there was a company called Vianet which was promoting a wavelet based video codec called Lighting Strike LSVX. Interestingly this copany was based in Plano, TX (same place "our" press release originates), it looks like this company no longer exists, but there is a mail (http://vcc.urz.tu-dresden.de/listarch/mbone-de-0103/msg00034.html) pointing at their site to download the codec and also a few samples (but vianet.com is down).

Looks like this codec has switched owner before ..i hope it also had a chance to be developped a bit during these 3.5 years, else it probably looks rather terrible.

try this : www.visicron.com
the codec is called now cyclon (humble, isn't it) the docs they provide show quite impressive results, anyway. however, it seems as if this site were not touched for a year or so.

i fear not :/ At least not out two older ones. Because in the codec PDF they compare cyclone vs vianet lsvx.

Besides that PDF tells us something about the quality of those two. Not because cyclone beats them all, but because the other tested codecs include h.263, m$ mpeg-4 v3, vp31, divx 4 and even indeo 5.11 - but nothing newer. On the almost-no-motion graph cyclone best them by a decent psnr in the low bitrate range it is printed, but in the normal-to-high-motion graph it beats divx 4 and m$ mpeg-4 v3 by an average 1-2 dB and even gets beaten by the old m$ one below 0.5 Kb/frame.

[edit] the second follower up is divx 4 not vianet, corrected, but vianet still is in this graph, just worse :)

[edit2] That PDF was modified in december 2003, so it is not that the are just too lazy to update the page ..they most likely really don't have anything better to show

Noticed that also espre talks about MPEG-4 and means M$ MPEG-4 v3 ..laughable ..or simply sad..

I was about to start a thread on ESPRE when I came accross that one.

Ok, anybody successfully installed their player? I wanted to check their codec but I can't make it work :( They are using JAVA...
