Containers Matroska and AVI ???

I have heard a lot talk about this container called Matroska.
Is it any better than AVI and are there perhaps better containers ?

What are the benifits of using Matroska and other containers ?
Is it possible to create Matroska with Gknot (Not Auto GordianKnot) ?

most of this has been discussed to death in the new containers forum. there you can also find information about other containers, namely ogm (outdated imho) and mp4 (similar to mkv - matroska)

and yes it is possible to creat mkv and ogm container video files with gordianknot...
