Hi,

I'm trying to encode som DVB material to Xvid. the reslution of the material is 352x576 (anamorphic I think)).

I'm not quite sure what output resulution to choose.

Would there be any point in going tfor an output resolution with a width of more than 352 pixels ?

My instinct tell me no since there are only 352 pixels in the input and making it larger would not make the quality better.

But If I set the imput aspect ratio to 256/117 PAL 352x576 input aspect ration and the anamorphic option is checked and chooses and output width of 352 pixels the output hieght is only set to 197 pixels.

And again my instinct tells me that here I'm loosing quality because the input size of 576 pixels is "downsized" to only 197 pixels.

My goal is to loose as little quality in the encoding as possible.

You have to see it for yourself what looks better: either leave width at 100% at reduce height or leave height at 100% and blow up width.

Thanks for your reply.

So the way i figure it You should leave the width at 100% and reduce hight if you think your playback device will do the zoom in better qality than Avisynth resize? But if you resize in GK you will need a higher bitrate = bigger file for the same quality.

I played a bit around with the Anamorphic setting in the aspect ration selection dialog. If I check it GordianKnot seems to unanamorph the video making it display correct in the preview window. If I uncheck it the video still seems Anamorph/stretched in preview. And the size is not 352X197 but 352x263.

What I was thinking was if it leave the Anamorphic option uncheck the result will be an Xvid anamorphic source?. So if I had a playback device that supported playback of anamorph video (I don't know if they exist) i would at least teoretically get a better picture quality hence the more lines (263) in the picture.

Does anyone know if there are devices/media players that will playback anamorph Xvid? and display the aspect ration corret. (I normally use the fantastic Xbox Media Center for playback)

The "Anamorphic" setting in GK were designed for the D1 resolutions of commercial DVDs. Checked = DAR 16:9, unchecked = DAR 4:3. You might consider taking a look at:
