anyone here have tested making movies for program called smartmovie? what are the best settings? what kind of quantization matrix should i use? maximum bitrate is about 160-192 in my tests. and another question is which one is faster on really low cpu machines like mobile phones, xvid 1.02/divx 5.21. i´m encoding my movies 12.5fps.
i have made some movies with settings b-frames off, gmc off, q-pel off, vhq-4, single pass 160kbs, quantization matrix ultra low bitrate, chroma motion on, chroma optimizer enabled and i´m quite satisfied with quality.

AFAIK there is no decoder for such a platform.

yes there is, go and see www.lonelycatgames.com :) i have watched a couple of movies on my n-gage

Yup, they've ported xvid to this platform.

Yes and it works very well.
I've a 7650 (has only 4 MB of memory) and I tested various files and settings.
I discovered that it doesn't work very well with B frames, QPel and GMC. Other settings are tollered.

That's just amazing. Star Trek technology here we come!!

The demo videos that come with that app look very good.

There are two of them, I checked them in Gspot:

demo1.avi
XviD
97kbps
176x132
12.605fps
Bframes (!)
MPEG2 Layer 3 audio
16000Hz CBR 24 kb/s (1 chnl)

demo2.avi
DivX 4 (OpenDivX)
36kbps
208x156
12.5fps
Bframes
(no audio)

Both of them play well on my Nokia 6600.

I'm going to try to encode a 22minute episode of Friends to a ~20MB XviD file and see how it plays.

i made a 119mb version of bowling for columbine, it just fitted in my memory card (128mb - programs). i´m very satisfied with movie quality.

i used settings:

resolution 208*176
12.5fps
1 pass-122kbs
b-frames on
adaptive quantization on
quantization type type=> mpeg custom> very low bitrate
gmc off
qpel off
vhq mode=4
msp=6
chroma motion=on
trellis=on
chroma optimizer enabled
mp3 16khz 24kbs

some things i have noticed, sound quality sucks :( (sending email for lonelycatgames, i want support for ogg audio:) 16khz and 24kbs mono is quite maximum quality, not enough cpu power for anything else in my n-gage. 2pass compression is not worth trying because there isn´t enough cpu power to play high bitrate scenes. and 12,5fps is optimal in my opinion.

and anyone heard of program called mobiclip. i have tested the beta version and i really really wait when the full version is coming out. it´played my test clips with really good quality and 24fps!! wow :)

I only have a 32MB card, so I'm limited to half-hour shows!

Can I see the AviSynth file you used? How did you convert it to 12.5fps? Did you have any audio sync problems?

i´m using the most easiest way, smartmovie converter :) i´t has option reduced frames, which cuts half of the frames (25fps to 12,5fps). and audio is also in sync :) i have also tried virtualdub in making mobile movies but i have some really really bad audio sync problems with it, don´t know why. someone has writed that it has something to do with audio preload time and interleaving settings, i need to try someday.

I'll try SmartMovie converter. Although I've been able to produce an XviD clip using exactly the same settings you have listed above, with VirtualDubMod.

It plays in sync on my PC, but seems to be out of sync on my 6600. What "Audio Preroll" setting are you using in the Options in SmartMovie on your phone?

I got a music video to 3MB, I'm going to use a 2 minute clip from a movie for my future test, so that it's easier to see if its in sync or not.

Thanks for the advice, by the way!

i tried to compress one 3m 30second music video with 16khz and 16kbs and audio preload 0ms and interleaving every 25frames and with those settings audio was in sync. another thing i noticed that if i make audio over 16khz audio is always out of sync, no matter what i do. my audio preroll time is 0.35s in my n-gage.

Be careful about too large an interleave setting. The larger the number of interleave frames, the larger the audio buffer size is needed to hold that duration of audio. Same with the Preload, it's just an audio buffer. If you have playback issues I would try lowering these settings. Don't confuse this with the Skew correction. That's for fixing sync issues between the audio and video tracks. Using audio over 16kHz could be failing because it's overflowing the audio buffer. An interleave of 25 at 12.5fps with 16kHz 16 bit audio means u need a buffer of 62.5 kB between file reads. 172 kB @ 44.1kHz

Thanks for the information,i start some new tests:) any opinions about using trellis in very low bitrate movies?

Trellis doesn't have anything to do with playback, it's an encoding setting. It should always be on.
