Formal codecs for differents XviD settings ?

Hi,

is possible ( OR will be in future ) to have different
FORMAL codecs for different XviD settings ?

I do workaround about that
by exporting/importing XviD registry key,
but this aproach I would like much more.

Or to have option save/load XviD settings profile.

Analogy for printers:

In Windows I like concept to create several formal printers
for the same physical one ( so does driver ),
BUT different printer settings
( like normal, economy, 2pages/sheet, booklet etc. )
So I can select printer "Booklet" and being happy printing
a booklet.

So I'd like to use either codec ( or XviD profile )
"XviD fast", "XviD normal", "XviD best", "XviD experimental"
or like that.

What do you think about that ?

Multiple codecs ? Personnally I don't like VP6 because it takes 3 slots...

But the idea of loading and saving settings is a good one. In fact, you're not the only one that has proposed it. I don't know why they haven't included such an option yet.

Ehm :confused: , what is VP6
and how is it related to formal codec idea ?

VP6 is a codec that uses more or less your concept of "formal" codecs for different profiles. for me, it is very annoying to see it show up 3 times in VDub... but each to his own of course :)

Now I see.
I have slow old PC ( Celeron 600/ 192 MB/Win98SE )
with low disk space ( 4.5GB free space)

I have low money and priority to buy a new one :(

Then because of file size
I am still forced to TV capture directly with by XviD.
I use 1pass fast encoding at res 384*288 with no
audio compresion ( or 1 bit/8kHz) speach encoding.

Unfortunately My PVR cannot remember any XviD settings.
It uses the last one written in registry.

XVID encoding takes a lot of processing power. IMHO, it is not suited to capturing, especially with your system.

1 bit/8kHz speech encoding seems like a very agressive way to eliminate data... Don't you care more about the audio quality ? With your system, you should be able to encode MS-APDCM directly.

So, XVID developpers, what do you say about including load/save settings functions ?

I am afraid that XviD is the only free one I tried
suitable for capturing in my system ;)

For e.g. Huffy ( I agree with recommending it :cool: )
I did not still have large enough hdd.
Most records I see once and delete.

For speach based documents DSP Group speach 8kHz 1bit is quite fine,
if size matter. Or if I plan to capture more movies...

In other cases I use CCITT A(u?)-Law.

ADPCM coding behaves strangly in my system.
It causes PVR freeze after exact same time ( cca 21min).

Hi,

MJPEG at quality 19 gives not too bad quality and takes less space than huffyuv. It is a very fast codec.

I'd also try using Divx 4.12, 1-pass quality based, Slowest, Encoding quality = 95%, and enable Max CPU usage = 100%. Because of both Slowest and a Max CPU usage limit, it should spend more time on encoding for simple scenes, saving you some space, and less on complex ones. However, when it would spend less time encoding complex scenes, instead of affecting quality (as if bitrate was constant), it would compensate with a higher bitrate. I would then reencode this to XVID using the highest quality settings.

I haven't tested this second solution myself and can't garantee the results, but if I were you, I'd give it a try.

What's PVR ? Is it the software you use ? I use FreeVCR 1.2 beta 9. No problems encoding audio in MS-APDCM.

Unfortunately MJPEG is not free.
I compared it with Xvid with MSP=0 ( i.e I-BOP only )
and Q=2. The size is the same.
XviD takes in that case even less CPU in my PC,
maybe because audio compression.

But I-frames only ( = cca JPEG ) are is still too low compression
for my HDD.

I know, I should buy larger, but money priority
is not high enough for do it :(

I have Leadtek XP Expert TV card with
its original PVR Winfast.(WDM based drivers)

I have also tried free PowerVCR,
but unfortunately I was not able to tune up
any TV station, maybe the solution is not
straightforward enough to me :-)

ffdshow is free and can do MJPEG. No idea about the speed though.

Now I remember :rolleyes: my Winfast PVR by Leadtek
can do MJPEG, because I use it when comparing to XviD MSP=0.
For some reasons there are not any settings for it
( no quality 19 or 20 as soewhere recommended )

Bandwidth for 384*288 res is about 10000 kb/s,
CPU demand about 70% of Celeron 600/66 (MMX,SSE)

Note that Winfast MJPEG is audio independent,
So I really compared just videocodecs.

i.e. XviD with MSP=0 ( no motion prediction, no P and B frames)
, VHQ=0, no chroma motion, , Q=2, (not sure if MPEG or H263 )

was slightly faster then MJPEG at cca same bitrates.
