How can I convert an AVI (DivX or XviD) file format to a DV file format compatible?

I've never bothered, but if you'd like to try, here is a general outline: Install one of the many DV codecs available; see the FAQ and the Links threads.

Convert soundtrack to LPCM.

Resize to D1 (720x480 for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL). You may need to add letterboxing to keep the appropriate content aspect ratio.

If needed, convert 23.976 to 29.97 fps for NTSC via pulldown (Telecine).I'm sure some of the consumer editing tools can automate this process for you, since most can place editing projects into DV format for storing to tape.

I have a miniDV and use it on Premiere, don´t know if I have to install a DV codec cause I can export to DV format inside Premiere Pro, but I cannot import AVI files (DivX/XviD) like movies on the Premire Timeline. Which tools I can use to resize, reencode...?

VirtualDub(Mod) and AviSynth if needed. But VirtualDub should be alright. You can get version 1.5.10 from www.virtualdub.org or Doom9.

Another option if you have a FAST computer is Video2DV. It can play any "video" you can see on your computer monitor out to an IEEE1394 (ie: DV) device. It re-renders on the fly. You may have to use FF for aspect ratio correction though, unfortunately it does not do this (I have written to the author, but no response).

There are many DV codecs to choose from. Some good, some not so good. I personally use the Panasonic VFW DV codec.

reference note from personal experience:

Files encoded into DV using Vdub(mod) are not proper DV AVI Type2 files, so you'll have a problem if you try to send it to tape. (the problem is no sound)

My fix is to edit, resize, etc... in vdubmod using huffyuv. And then convert the final version to DV AVI type1 using Firestore DV File Converter before I stream it to tape for archiving. This creates a proper DV stream with both video and audio.

I use Pinnacle Studio 9 and it can read a non-DV AVI file... and I think also insert it in the timeline (never tried though). I think it includes DivX/XviD formats and I used it also for other formats.
