View Full Version : Extracting Easter Egg in LOTR

While using DVD Decrypter to make a backup copy of Fellowship of the Ring, I noticed, near the end of the process, what turned out to be an easter egg - a parody of the Coucil of Elrond scene.

Looking at the files, it appears that the easter egg is contained in a single VOB file.

I tried to create a DVD with just that scene by starting Nero (DVD creation section) and adding that particular VOB file to my selections. I continued on and burned a DVD. Unfortunately, while the DVD shows a menu in my stand alone player, nothing happens when I try to play it.

Am I misssing something?

Is there a better way to backup just a single scene from a dvd?

Is this even possible?

I don't have much software. Besides Nero 6, I have DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and ImgTool.

Any advice?

I see no problem if you are using TMPGenc DVD Author or DVD Lab to author with menus if you do it right.

I've used the trim tool in DVD-Shrink for just this purpose many times. It produces perfect dvd-structured output, ready to burn.

Thanks for the replies, but I have no idea what either of you are talking about. Sorry, I'm a newbie at this.

However, when I open the movie in DVD Shrink, I get the following DVD structure:

Menus
Main Movie
Title 1, 2
Extras
Title 3
Unreferenced Material
Title Menus

Now, if I select Title 3 and use the slider bar in the lower left corner, I can see the whole "chapter" that I'd like to "extract". My question is, how can I do this?

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Or if you just want the VOB without the IFOs, just use DVD Decrypter in File mode. Select only VTS_02_1.VOB.

Well, that was easy (and do I feel stupid). I used the "re-author" function (which I didn't understand before) and it works perfectly.

Again, I apologize. I've only used this to make backups and have no experience in selecting only parts of a dvd.

Thanks to your re-author suggestion, I see where I can set start and end frames too. Too cool (no pun intended).

Thanks again.

PS> Since this will let me cut scenes from dvds, is there a way to cut scenes from various dvds and then burn them all to a single disk. Can Nero be use for this or will this require a more advanced edit software?

absolutely no need to apologize...

yes of course this is possible, also only using dvdshrink... it requires two steps though (afaik)... first, in reauthor mode, select the parts of each dvd that you want, make sure that you do not compress them (you'll do that in step two) and copy them to your hard disk to seperate folders. after you're done with all pieces of the dvds you want, fire up dvdshrink once more, go to reauthor mode once again, use the 'dvd browser' to find the folders where you saved your clips and drag and drop the titles into the final dvd, adjust compression settings as desired and off you go :)

You want to polish up your re-authored DVD Shrink multiple Title backup? You can use your Title Menu button to skip to next Title. It's easy now that PgcEdit has automated my algorithm (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61238).

1. Open up your DVD Shrink folder with PgcEdit

2. Click on Macros > DVDShrink Remote buttons

3. Click Yes to continue

4. I pretty much check them all but if you don't want your DVD to be in a endless loop, uncheck the last option.

5. Click continue

6. Yes to continue anyway

7. Save DVD

8. Play and test out your Title button.
