i have a file with a .rmvb how do i play it?

real player will do it. or the directshow real splitter...
i think it's a legacy file extension, but the format is probably the same as regular realmedia files (like *.rm)

You can just rename it to .rm (Real Encoder says that Variable Bitrate files need the .rmvb extension, but they don't - .rm works fine)

Install RealPlayer and use Media Player Classic. More options and faster :D
