View Full Version : Erasing DVDRW problems with RecordNow and Philips 75

I'm having problems getting RecordNow to erase DVDRW's which contain recordings from my Philips 75 recorder. RecordNow's erasing function recognizes there are files on the DVD (even though I do a disc erase on the Philips recorder), attempts to erase, then just asks for a new disc to be inserted.

I tried DeepBurn instead & it fails stating there is some form of write protection envoked.

I tried DVDDecrypter. Here's what it says about the Destination:
- Status: Complete
- Erasable: Yes
- Formatted: No (Started)
- Sessions: 1

- Format Capacity:

The attached file shows the error when trying to burn an ISO file after it detects that files exist on the DVDRW.
Below is the log:

I had this problem on an occasional disc but now it's happening with all of them. Ideas?

Do you have any packet writing software installed that could be locking the drive / disc?

What happens if you try and do a FULL erase in DVD Decrypter? (right click the drive drop down box and hit 'Erase' -> 'Full'.

If it starts and does the first bit ok, it should say

Formatted: No (In Progress)

in the little window on the right.

Leave it for about 30 mins so the background bit done by the drive itself finishes.

Then if you refresh (press F5), it should say

Formatted: Yes

Thanks for the reply.
Attempting a Full Erase I get:

I/O Error!
Device (1:0:0) HP DVD Writer 300n 1.25 (E:) (ATA)
ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB: 04 11 00 00 00 00

I don't know how to determine if I have any packet writing software locking the drive.?

Ok, well what burning software have you installed?

Roxio, Nero, RecordNow etc?

You normally get a little system tray icon for these things - thats the bit near the clock.

See if you can find one for packet writing (InCD, DirectCD etc) and then disable it.

I use RecordNow, but I don't think its resident - no system tray icon except for volume, nvidia, and mcafee. Here's a list of my running processes:
Avconsol.exe
Avsnmgr.exe
csrss.exe
jusched.exe
kbd.exe
lsass.ee
ltmsg.exe
Mcshield.exe
nvsvc32.exe
RuLaunch.exe
rundll.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
snmp.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
system
system idle process
taskmgr.exe
ViewMgr.exe
vshwin32.exe
VSStat.exe
wdfmgr.exe
winlogon.exe

I don't see anything associated with DVD drives, but maybe I'm missing something. Maybe a driver or dll that's got a hold of it?

Ok, within Explorer, right click on your dvd+rw drive and hit properties.

There may or may not be a 'DLA' tab. If there is, there should be and option to disable it on that drive.

Reboot and try formatting again.

No DLA tab to be found or any mention of DLA on any other tabs, property areas, driver info, etc.

As a test, I burned a DVDR just know the writer is still working probably and doesn't yield a similar "write protect" type error.

No problem writing a DVDR.
So my problem is specific to DVDRWs.

Hmmm I'm sure these software locks are just in software running on the PC and not the disc itself. Still, I dont have a standalone recorder so I'm only guessing.

Maybe the standalone has in fact locked the disc so you cant write to it. Not much you can do if that's the case. Get another rewritable!

Oh and yes this locking stuff would only apply to rewritables.

If you've got the time to play around, I'd try rebooting in safe mode or something and then have a go at formatting.

You could also just remove all of your other burning software and see if anything makes a difference. You can always put it back on afterwards :)

I also have the Philips 75 recorder and it does have an option to lock a disc so somebody cant record over the material thats on it. Just the same as when you snap out the little tab on a VHS tape.

If you put the disc in and go to the philips menu and see the word 'protected' anywhere you just need to knock of the protection again in the menu.
