View Full Version : Encoding from source w/mixed 30FPS progressive and 30FPS telecine?

I'm trying to encode a source which is ~20% 30fps progressive and ~80% 30fps telecine.
What's the best way to deal with this? I've tried TomsMoComp, but it creates jumpiness in the 30fps progressive and also blurs it.
Is there any way that I can preserve the 30fps progressive while performing IVTC on the rest?

Is that the value DVD2AVI reports?
Try using Smartdecimate or Telecide/Decimate to get it back to 23.976 fps first, these will most likely give you best results.
What's the source by the way?

Nope; DVD2AVI just reports 'interlaced,' but it's definetly a mix of telecine (3 progressive: 2 interlaced) and 30fps progressive.

The telecine material looks fine w/telecide/smartdecimate, but the progressive material is of course terribly jumpy. Maybe I should just be happy with the blurriness and slight jumpiness of TomsMoComp?

It's a science fiction made-for-tv movie. The stuff with real-life actors is telecine, but the CGI seems to have been rendered in 30fps progressive frames for some reason. IIRC there was some sort of issue where the original CGI was not in widescreen so it had to be changed for the DVD...or something like that.
Oh, btw -- maybe I should add that by 30fps I actually mean 29.970. I hope that didn't throw you off.

This sounds like hybrid material. Pretty much you have only 3 choices:
1) blend decimate the 30 fps cg section to 24 and make it the whole thing 24
2) introduce blends in the 24 fps section (IVTC'ed section) and up the whole thing to 30.
3) Keep them separate, this would involve generating a variable framerate encode.
As much as you desire option 3, it'd require substantial more effort than 1 & 2, as it needs manual identification of 24/30 scenes.
Decimate() from Decomb would be able to assist you on all 3 options, please check the doc.
Edit: Depending on the CG content, you might be able to interpolate down the framerate successfully via the help of MVTools or motion perfect (commercial software), which will likely generate a smoother video than a blend decimation.

I managed to get this AviSynth plugin working, which mostly fixes the problem:

But some combed frames still escape. Maybe I'll have to mess around with running FieldDeinterlace at a very low threshold setting...
Where can I find MVTools? A google search didn't reveal anything.
