encoding/decoding problems - what filters to install (was: Newbie needs help)

I have followed the guides on this doom9 site and eventually got everything working. I made my first dvd rip and it was good. Then I did something and I was unable to sync the sound, so I tried to fix it now I've lost picture.

I've tried everything, I've even reinstalled windows a couple times.

What I have now is a clean install of XP Pro with just my GPU, mainboard, and audio drivers. I have a ghost image of this so I can return to this point at anytime.

I hoping someone can tell me exactly what programs I need, to simply rip a dvd to my harddisk into one file and then play that file throgh Windows Media Player. All I really need is for someone to guide me through the installation.

I'm assuming DVD Decrypter, DVD2AVIdg, and something for the audio. Also what codecs are best. I don't want help with the actuall programs I'll re-read the guides for that. It's just getting the system to work. Then I'll take an image of that so I can always return to it.

So... you can't playback videos? Well, I would suggest to install

FFDshow
XviD
DivX

Search on google and download those things. Should fix your "no image" issue.

Even if somany formats are there, you only need two things to decode ( Playback)

1. ffdshow
&
2. Media Player Classic.

Most of video part is done by ffdshow and similarly most types of audio is supported by Media Player Classic.

Well if you want to make rips, then use AutoGK( manythings are installed with AGK, which are necessary ) + DVDDecrypter + XviD.

You must consider that he wants to encode and therefore he should
install only the latest versions of codecs. Thus trusting in the
possibly outdatet version of XviD provided with GK would be not
reasonable.

I was thinking about just installing one codec, I'm not too concerned about being able to play other peoples rips. I just want to play my own, so I only want to install one codec, I think when I installed another codec it stop everything from working.

Is AutoGK the Gordian Knot robot thing? I'd prefer to do everything myself so I just want install the applications.

Does ffdshow replace dvd decryptor, besweet or dvd2avidg?

What's the best codec is DivX 5.2 better than 5.1.1?

ok, if you just install one codec for encoding/playback either install divx or xvid

autoGK is a new tool that fully automates the dvd ripping process. just rip the dvd to your hd using dvddecrypter, point autogk to the folder, and let autogk do the rest.

ffdshow is a direct show playback filter that can playback just about any mpeg4 video, it doesn't replace any of the apps you mentioned!

You should always use the latest version of a codec. In this case,
5.2 is the latest version of DivX.

I read somewhere that 5.2 doesn't work with xp sp2 installed? Is this not true?

There is a 5.2.1 BETA out there which should give no problems with SP2.
