Hi there,

I was wondering if there'd be a chance to see a Macintosh section in doom9's forum, it would shurely be neat, if a decent number of OSX users actually browse thsi forum looking for some infos...

Let me know what you think about it!

Not sure if it would be cool. How many d9 users use mac? I think it's even less than linux...

They're surely less than linux's, but this is because there isn't much a Mac user can find here useful for his machine, maybe if a Forum Section was opened, they'd join and stay!

VirtualPC could be a solution ;)

Nah, that's far too slow, on my 1.33 Ghz G4, I can encode audio using iTunes as fast as with a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz first generation, but on VPC I'm very little ahead my old P2 350@420 !

My main hope is to see an official XviD decoder on mac, as the only good one available is 3ivX's one, but it has some severe decoding bugs with the latest xvids!

Doesn't mplayer or other linux compatible video player work on OSX?

It is. Quicktime and VLC (the best player available) share the same bug of 3ivX codec (as they use the same one), MplayerOSX suffers of the same problem, maybe a little less, but, mostly on very dark scenes, I see flashing dark green and huge macroblocks all around the darker areas of the current image; I mostly tried clips done using 1.0.1 release of XviD's codec using no bframes, qpel or GMC. On my Kiss they're fine and on PC the same!

VideoHelp forum contains an active Mac section.

It's always a hen & egg problem, isn't it? There's virtually no MAC traffic, even the Linux forum is kept alive more by hope than anything else (that one, as well as the NLE forum really lack somebody who has the drive to turn the respective sub-forum into something). I'm afraid without such a driver, chances aren't too good that a mac forum would do much better.

While, admittedly, a site like this isn't something that many mac guys would like... most of us are more concerned with content creation than technical aspects of movie compression and delivery, but I'd be more than happy to give some assitence.

There may be a site or two still up for Mac Ripping such as ripdifferent.com, but nothing groundbreaking. There is a Mac section over at the DivX.com forums though. You can find it here (http://forums.divx.com/viewforum.php?forum=14). The forums at 3ivx.com might be able to offer some help/information too.

I'm switching to Mac and Linux completely within a month. I'll still have my kid's computer running windows for games and stuff like that. If I do run any dvd ripping related programs it'll be dvddecrypter and dvdshrink on my kid's P4 2.4Ghz computer.

I've been playing with Popcorn, DVD2ONEX and MacTheRipper and they seem pretty decent. Basically the dvd-rom/cd-rw that comes with mac mini and I assume other macs is CSS 2X locked. So I put my 16X Lite-on dvd burner in a firewire external enclosure and rip at 8X and burn at 8X. Mac OS X won't see it. http://www.patchburn.de is a simply utility that adds external burners to your systems profile so it can be burned via Disk Utility. Dragon Burn and Toast already support external burners but disk utility is free that comes with OS X. Popcorn comes with toast built-in it's easy. DVD2ONEX uses mkisofs to convert /VIDEO_TS to .iso and then you can use disk utility. Some mention Handbrake which converts to xvid/divx.

Here's some command line utils may come in handy.

drutil list
drutil info
drutil tray open
drutil tray close
drutil tray eject or disktool -e disk2

Anyway mac is a viable platform IMHO and will gain in popularity. I'd like to see a section for it someday.

I kept trying to burn it via CLI but gave up and install patchburn. Probably it'd work now if I tried it again.

I totally agree. I would love to see some development on something equivelant to Jdobb's wonderful creation, DVD rebuilder. I use a duel 2ghz G5 with 1.5g ram and would love to put it to work encoding some backups. Are there any good encoders floating around out there? I am only familer with quicktime and compressor which comes with Final Cut pro.

I joined 11 small quick time movies in imovie, and I played the finished video in DVD player, all was well.
I then burned it in toast 2x and when I played the finished DVD on a stand alone DVD player I got moments of lag right the way through.
Somehow the audio caught up to the video in sections and everything sounded OK and then out of the blue the sound lag happened again and so it went on.
Any suggestions or help please .
Thank you
