I recently installed Divx5.2 and can encode and edit avi files with divx5 on virtualdub, however I need the same solution to edit a xvid file epcept that I don't have a xvid installer, does anyone know what is the right codec to encode the decode?

Did you try an XviD codec?

How about downloading xvid codec then? Either from www.xvid.org (that's if you have a compiler @ home) or an already pre-compiled one from www.koepi.org

The question as it seemed to already contain the answer.

WMP uses directshow and VDub Video for Windows (VFW), if you want to open a file in VirtualDub you need a VFW codec for it. fortunately, XviD is VFW.

I installed an xvid codec that let encode avis but it makes is slow to rewind or foward, other xvid codec coulded let me reviwed and foward quickly but didn't show or appear on the virtual compressing list.

If you install the latest XviD stable (from koepi) there is a program called vidc.cleaner in the program directory (start-->programs-->xvid). after running that the codec should show up. also, when installing another XviD make sure to uninstall the old one manually first. it goes wrong at times if you just install over it.

I don't think being "just" a junior member invalidates his point, seeing it is valid and all. :p

I don't think the Doom9 forums do or should discriminate between "junior" and "senior" members anyway.

VirtualDub (and its variants, such as Nandub and VirtualDubMod) require the codecs.
MPEG-4 playback in a video player application does not necessarily require the codec. Other codecs may be used for playback, (e.g.: XviD used for DivX, or ffdshow used for all sorts of codecs).
This is not a DivX related thread.
I am moving this thread to the VirtualDub forum, where such questions rightly belong.

@CCEncoder: Please re-read the rules; you seem to have missed Rules 3 and 4, and perhaps a review of Rule 1 is also in order. You may not have blatently broken them, but you are certainly skating around the edges.
