Not sure exactly which section the thread belongs, but here I go:

DVD Player: Sony DVP-S7700 (old!) Region 1
My Location: North America
Source: 24 PAL VCDs, MPEG-1 25 FPS 352x288
Goal: Backing them onto 3 disc of 4.7GB DVD-R, about 8 VCDs per DVD.

Steps:
following this guide: link (http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=othertodvd&name=vcdtodvd)
1. Rip each VCD dat->mpg using VCDGear (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=98#comments).
2. Merge & Cut in TMPGEnc Plus (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=278#comments).
3. Simple De-multiplex in TMPGEnc Plus.
4. Convert the audio to 44100Hz to 48000Hz in BeSweet (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=92#comments).
5. Author the DVD in TMPGEnc DVD Author (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=181#comments).

Problem: When I try to play the DVD Sony display a message "Playing this disc prohibited by area limits". The PAL VCDs play fine on the Sony, but it would not work when I put them onto a DVD. So I try the PAL>NTSC patch method (http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221928). When I change the info in the IFO from PAL to NTSC it does play, but the video over-stretched on the TV (see images). Is there anything I can do to fix this? Do I have to reencode? Or it's just my Sony acting out? Thanks.

When seen on computer:
everything's intact, of course since it's on the comp.

original PAL VCDs on my TV:
small part of left and right are chopped off

authored DVD on my TV after the patch method:
even worse, part of bottom is chopped off

Sure you have to reencode the movie (possibly the audio too). You have to change the framerate from 25 to 23.976 or 29.97 and you have to resize the video to 352x240. NTSC standards.
