Hello everyone.

I just finished a project in Premiere and exported it to an avi file. The problem is that that titles, especially credits look jerky.

I used the interlaced and lower field first but it shows same result on TFT or standard tv.

Can anyone help pls? If furthermore information is needed, pls tell me.

A little more information would probably be good:

Premiere Version? Video format (DV probably?)
How do you play the titles on tv (from graphics adapter to tv directly or do you record to DV tape and then play back on tv)?
Maybe you can upload a small part of the titles somewhere.

Using Premiere 6 and Pro. Both same problem. Yes DV PAL.
I play titles directly from the video card, through tv out.
I tried exporting just the credits and playing them on their own but with same results.

is there some other editing software installed?
(the kind that will use its own codec and also took over the playback - with wrong field order ... , dunno, just guessing.)

Sorry but can't understand what you mean. I have Sony DV Gate and Windows Movie Maker installed. Does it make a difference?

for example: if i edit something on liquid edition and i want to play that file later on some other machine with just native ms dv codecs, the field order will be wrong.

So you are suggesting that i should switch field order?

By the way, titles are jerky even in Premiere's preview, ie before exporting.

can you post few frames? (jpegs will do) if not, please send to:
smok3.j at gmail dot come (only limit is 10 megs per one mail afaik)

I captured a frame but it looks good as a frame. It's when it is moving that looks jerky.

I can send you a title if you want but you need premiere to open it.

then post a sekond or so of the most jerky part in dv-avi.

Have a 2 sec but can't post it here. Do you mind if I email you?

Ok. I zipped it. Here it is.

I attached a zip file but can't see it in thread. Did I do something wrong?

check on adamwilt (www.adamwilt.com) site
he got some tips and issues about field order, color bleeding and others pathologies about titles on NLE's

hope it help

Attachment seems ok. Did anyone figure out the problem?

this SEEMS to have something to do with:
- dv and hardedged graphic (especially white on black will look horrible)
- using very tiny fonts for interlaced tv (not recommended) - you are better of with sans-serif like arial.

(from my experiments - good quality mpeg2 (interlaced) will look better than dv for this specific purpose...)

------------------

you could try:

- reducing the contrast a bit (making white less white that is)
- generate that effect with some other software and import that into editor (like after effects, inscriber or something that will give you control on how hard the font edges will be...)
- use some other fonts
- do some other magic.

[QUOTE]I also think it looks like that. I.e. if you have a graphic with 1pt or 2pt lines the lines will always flicker on interlaced tv, nothing you can do about it except use thicker lines...

http://url removed cos i need my web space for other stuff (cca 5 megs)
a similar example, just encoded with liquid edition (that uses pinnacles
dv codec (afaik), still crapy..., so the solutions are clear :) .)

Sorry but didn't quiet understand what I should do. I have no other software to do titles except the premiere's built-in title editor. It has no line pts. Can you explain what I can do?

Wish to use same font and size.

Smok3, can't view link you posted. Does it uses a specific codec?

Just got into Adobe forum and this problem is mentioned in many threads but no definite answer. Seems AE has same problem too.

Any good suggestions pls?

Btw problem seems to persist no matter what size, font, background or text colour is used.

http://www.adamwilt.com/Tidbits.html#CGs

This is a good site that explains what exactly happens if it can help anyone. Seems there are title designer software that caters for such interlacing problem.

Does anyone knows any?

i allready mentioned inscriber..., anyway, what you can try if you are stuck to premiere is:

open a new interlaced project that is 2xpal size for example, render the titles there and export that as some sort of uncompressed video, then import them back into your pal project, scale them down - that might be enough softening to reduce or even completely remove the problem (at the price of the softer-edged text.)

That seems a good solution as I have no disk space where to install a new software.

Just a couple questions.

1. How do I make a 2x pal size and back to normal?
2. If it's a still title (which has same problem) how do I export it? As an avi file? If so, how can I superimpose it on video? I'm relatively new to premiere but I like it. Still learning!

Btw I saw inscriber, seems a very good software but can't use it till I finish this project due to lack of hard disk space.

1. you export the video (title) as 32 bit picture sequence for example (tga should do fine).
2. you export just one frame as some sort of 32 bit picture and then reimport/resize to your original project.

(mr. wilt mentions the blur option, but resizing should work better simply becouse you have more control on how to perform it.

you could also just use photoshop for still and motion titles and the same scaling 'trick' starting at for example 2xpal and then you would just render-down the text layers and resize the thingy back to pal resolution - but in case of photoshop you have to take into consideration that any version prior to CS can only deal with 1:1 pixel aspect ratio (you could simply use 768x576 as pal final resolution))

Ok thanks. Will try it but how do I resize it in project and how do I superimpose the titles?

smok3

32 bit = 24 bit for image info + 8 bit for transparency info (usually called alpha channel - which allready defines the areas that should or should not be visible...)

for resizing you would use the 'scale' option naturally :) (press f1 for more info)

This doesn't work every time, but it may be worth a try. Apply a effect called gaussian blur to the area of the video where you are having title problems. Set the value of the blur to 0.0. This should not change the video in any way (hence the 0.0 setting) but it does force Premiere to render each frame of the segment because it thinks there is an effect to apply. This can help to smooth up jagged edges and smooth motion a bit. Like I said doesn't work every time but it may help to improve what is already there.

Cheers!
