Interlaced source encoded with CCE

Hi everybody,

I've read somewhere that CCE has difficulties to handle interlaced source and may produce bad quality with it. Is it true ? If yes, then is it better to deinterlace before ? Thanks to let me know !

Well, interlaced material is more difficult to encode and it is the opinion of some that other apps - e.g. Canopus Procoder - handle interlaced stuff better.

Deinterlacing isn't a great solution because that introduces artifacts. Unless you are encoding at low bitrates it's probably best to keep the video interlaced.

What bitrate do you mean by low bitrate ? I would like to know under what bitrate I should deinterlace. Thx.

Well of course it's subjective and source dependent but one figure that I'd seen bandied about as the suggested minimum is 3000 kbps average. Running a 1-pass VBR in CCE may provide an objective indication of the bitrate required though.

At lower bitrates it's a choice between what is worse - artifacts related to deinterlacing, or artifacts relating to low bitrate.

Ok, thx. Do you think QuEnc is able to well handle interlaced source ?

I've never used it, but QuEnc is a free solution, so it ain't going to beat CCE...

From what I've read, typically it's Procoder that people tell you to look at as an alternative. Seems to cheat a little by using filters but if the end result looks like you want it to...

I have done many interlaced encodes with CCE Basic, and the output looks great. I can't understand why so many people say its bad for interlaced. It may not be optimized for interlaced, but its not bad.

CCE has a special checkbox for interlaced encodes. Make sure you select "alternate" and not "zigzag". Also make sure the "progressive frame" box is unchecked.

And most important, never deinterlace if you will be watching the output on a television.

Here are settings you should use for interlaced content:

deactivate 'progressive frames' (in any case)
deactivate 'zigzag scanning order' (in any case)
deactivate 'upper field first' -for tff-source
activate 'upper field first' -for bff-source
