I think that my sony drive may be dying on me, but i'm not totally sure.

Its a sony oem drive, that I flashed with the hacked sony 510-a firmware, and it has the latest firmware on it.

For years I have been burning these 25 cent 4x sonic dvd-r's with zero problems at all. I get them from meritline.

With my last purchase of 200 discs from meritline, I noticed that the media looks a little different, and they put a white coating on the top of the disc instead of just the shiny surface. This made me think that they changed the media

Anyway I have been burning them at almost a 50 percent failure rate, which is terrible.

Anyway, I'm building a new computer anyway and I'm going to donate the old 4x burner to my file server in the basement for backups (if it still works).

I'm looking into a new drive. Whats the best drive out there now thats semi reasonable. I'm looking for a drive that is not picky with media, and very fast.

How about that 84 dollar 16x NEC drive?

Thanks,
Justin

www.anandtech.com just did a review of the new Pioneer drive and they said as of right now it's by far the best DVD burner on the market. They are waiting to test the new NEC drive that has yet to be released.
