View Full Version : Is there any tool for joining MPEG-2 files ?

It would be a nice addition to QuEnc. My computer is
somewhat slow, so I'm encoding MPG in parts. The problem is
that after DVD authoring it causes delays in playing.
Maybe there is a (free ?)(command-line ?) tool that will simply
join MPG files together ? Or better, join m2v and mp2 files ?
Or there is another solution for the problem ?
For authoring, I'm using dvdauthor+dvdauthorgui

probably be better to upgrade to a better dvd authoring application, all the ones ive tried dont create pauses between clips (or PGC's for those that only support a single clip to a PGC).

you can try DVDLab for 30 days or TMPGEnc DVD Author (I think it has also a trailperiode...).
... or use DVTool (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=4#comments). Follow the Link and You'll have also guides for it.
Hope this helps.

I found the reason - it's in dvdauthorgui. It forms xml
file in the special way that causes that behaviour.
Unfortunately, I could not reach the author of the gui
by email.

I have not seen your email. Every title added to the gui creates a separate pgc for each title. If you are not satisfied with the layout, the gui has a XML editor, that allows you to edit the XML before authoring. What layout are you using?

There is something wrong with E-mail, I'll resend it - I've found
another more serious bug .
If each title is in a separate pgc then DVD player makes a pause
after playing it. If they are in the same pgc, no pause occurs.
DVDauthor documentation (if it could be called so) shows titles
placed into one pgc.
There should be (I think so) an option to place titles in separate
or in one pgc. In the simplest case it is easy to edit the XML
file, but I think the idea of this GUI is to eliminate this need.
I do not know what will happen with subtitles if the titles will
be placed in one pgc.

The only MPEG-2 joiner that I know of that's FREE is bbMPEG. I've used it in the past just to see a test run of what the final output might look like but bbMPEG can be buggy when it comes to joining and / or muxing videos. It's perfect for SVCD but for DVD it's not.
If there was another freeware app for muxing audio / video for MPEG-2 output I'd sure love to know about it ;)

I wouldn't consider that a bug at all. When you place multiple sequences into one pgc, dvdauthor will consider it one title (unless you are doing something completely different that I am not aware of). The example I am looking at is here: http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/doc/ex-title.html#AEN41
You could edit your XML to reflect those above changes, but keep in mind, it will be ONE title.
Also, you mention in your email that you are having trouble with the menu editor. Try resetting your scroll bar sizes to normal to see if that helps your situation.

TMPGEnc's "MPEG Tools" section is nice but you can only use it to join MPEG-2 video for 30 days.
I'll try DVTool today. Thanks.

Not all TMPGEnc have MPEG2 limitation. I have old TMPGEnc-0.11.20.97 build that have no limitation at all. Maybe it is useles for encoding, but for muxing and cutting it works great.

TMPEGenc Plus 2.5 license is $37, it wouldn't bankrupt you to buy the software. It'll do everything you want, plus it's an excellent MPEG2 encoder too!!

Any Mac users should also consider MPEG Append (http://homepage.mac.com/DVD_SP_Helper/MPEG%20Append/MPEGAppend.html), which joins MPEG files CORRECTLY, adhering strictly to spec (some tools are not spec-compliant, which can yield unreliable results - not worth the risk if you are in commercial production).
