Ok, maybe this problem isn't so big that it qualifies as a "nightmare," but I couldn't resist ... :D
This is the first time I've ever had trouble ripping a DVD, so I'm scouting about for suggestions as to what the problem might be. The disc in question is, of course, the Special Edition of Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas." I bought this when it was released, I would say more than 3 years ago (I don't know if there's been an additional version since). My kids watch it incessantly, so I figured I better make copies before it becomes history.
I thought this would be routine, so I loaded up the disc in DVD Shrink (latest version). But during DVD Shrink's analyzation process, it freezes every single time at 13%, on almost the same frame.
So I moved on to DVD Decrypter (latest version). The odd thing here is that with every attempt I've made to rip this disc, something won't rip. One time I just made an attempt to rip all the files on the disc, and 1 file failed. Of note, I specifically recall that that file was part of the VTS_05xxx.VOB series.
I got frustrated and decided, hell, I'll just rip the main movie VOBs (VTS_02 in this case) and take the trouble to author a new disc. But with that attempt, every time one of the VTS_02 series (note: the same one) will not rip (I get an I/O error). I have of course tried ripping that single file separately, but get the error every time.
The interesting thing to note here, of course, is that when I ripped the whole disk only 1 file failed, and that file was not the VTS_02xxx.VOB file in question. I.e., that file must have ripped at one time.
I have tried ReJig and Smart Ripper, and both fail.
Now I've searched this forum and others and have heard mention of folks copying/ripping this disc (assuming it's the same edition), so I don't believe there's a copy-protection issue. Do you think my disc could simply be damaged? I ask because, since I've never had this trouble before, I don't know what the "symptoms" of copy protection are. If a rip were to fail because of some copy protection issue, would it behave this way (i.e. most files ripping, but not 1 or 2 crucial ones), or would the sucker just not rip at all?
I have of course examined the disc and it does not appear to be terribly scratched/marred, if at all.
Suggestions?
