Is directshow broken on my computer? I can't play an videos, and I do have the codec

For a while now I can't play any videos at all, the only thing I get is sound. I tried uninstalling all my media players, reinstalling directx, mediaplayers, ffdshow, and xvid, but still can't play even mpegs. I open the file with gspot and it says I have codecs to play the video, but it still wont play. I am wondering if maybe directshow is corrupted somehow.

well if directshow itself was corrupted reinstalling directx should have fixed it!

anyway, seems like you are up for a reinstall of your system! :)

no, seriously, it probably would be the best idea! what you could try first though, is to remove _all_ the codecs and then reinstall only the ones you need! and by remove i mean everything, including all the registry entries etc etc!

Try to run RadLight with logfile turned on. As the logfile is quite extensive it could give you a hint on what's going on. :rolleyes:

Its a pretty fresh windows server 2003 standard installation. I'd like to find out what got messed up so I can avoid it in the future. But, yeah, I'm really leaning towards a re-install.

How do I find all the registry keys and little leftovers?

OK. So what we have here is a MPEG file with 2 audio streams and one video stream. (that's quite unusual)

The "MPEG Audio Decoder" has been connected, as well as the "MPEG Video Decoder" - everything seems OK and the file should play fine. Unfortunatelly, the Audio/Video renderer creation sequence is not being logged so I can't tell if that passed successfully :(

Did you get no video window or a blank video window?

when you loaded the file into gspot, did you also hit the 'Render' button in the lower area of Gspot? perhaps this can give you a couple of clues as to where your problem lies exactly!

I believe that the problem does not lie in DirectShow itself, as the graph rendering has been completed successfully (this can be indeed verified using GSpot or even better, GraphEdit)

Maybe graphics card drivers? :rolleyes: :confused:

Yes, GSpot renders it successfully. I did install omega's drivers for my ati card before the problem started but ran those for a while with no playback problems. After the problem started I uninstalled those and reinstalled ati's official drivers.

I just remembered I installed a game called kill.switch (very disappointing) around the time the problem started. I can't remember if it was before or after.

I just realized that I can't play dvd's either. I can select the menu items when the dvd first starts (even though I can't see them) and hear the sound, but no video. I forgot to say that I can play mpegs in quicktime, but only that.

woow, something is seriously screwed up there!

honestly my only advice now is to do a reinstall - or at least a repair install. i've never heard of something like this!

I figured out that was overlay mode that was causing the video not to be displayed (but I don't remember turning it on). It must be the drivers, because I am pretty sure my video card supports overlay (9700 pro). I have reinstalled them with no luck, (both omega's and official), maybe I need to completely wipe them from my system first then reinstall.
