Hello,

I am planning to install Debian in my computer and I am wondering if there is any program I can use to decrypt my DVD and copy them in my computer! Is there any, or should I use dvddecrypter under wine???

Thanks.

Use vobcopy for instance. It's really easy. An alternative is using mplayer. Search on freshmeat.net for details.

Use dvd::rip for all your Linux ripping/encoding needs.

dvd::rip is also in most repositories these days. I just used Synaptic to install it in Fedora Core 2. It does an excellent job. It's rather like Gordian Knot - it gives you a nice GUI interface that coordinates all those misc Linux proggies that do the ripping and encoding. It'll output avi, ogm, mpeg1 suitable for vcd, and mpeg2 suitable for svcd/dvd. It even has the ability to directly burn vcds and svcds.

You can also use dvdbackup (a tool similar to vobcopy).
Both are included in Debian Testing (sarge) and Unstable (sid).

I think you'll find dvd::rip a bit messy when it comes to ripping... (not encoding).
You can find debian packages of dvd::rip here: http://www.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/debian-marillat/

I've read somewhere in the debian weekly news, that a new stable version (3.1) is going to be released (15 September). I won't use my computer to convert video (I am planning to buy a notebook (HP pavilion 5700) with a dvd recorder on it), so the only thing I want, is a good application to copy and decrypt all the dvd contents into my hard drive, and a good application to burn these files afterwards into a dvd!!! Do you know any??? (Sorry for the confusion!)

Thanks!!!

Sounds like you just want DVD-Create (also called dvdbackup). It'll rip the DVD files to the harddrive. At that point you can use K3b to write them to a DVDR.

those are good suggestions for burning dvds as for decryption
apt-get install libdvdcss2

as for burning them onto a dvd, this can get tricky as commercial dvd's can be larger than the 4.4 gigs you can put on a burned dvd.
dvd shrink under wine is one option.
as for native linux apps.... I haven't had enough luck or enough time to make one work. ymmv.
