View Full Version : Scenaid 1.0 prerelease
D3s7
20th August 2004, 00:50
Ok... going to take a chance here..
beta tests of my Scenaid 1.0 prerelease have been going fairly well therefore I want to expand the tests before I officially release 1.0..
Scenaid 1.0 prerelease is now on the Scenaid website under the downloads section.
This build includes a number of fixes and additions to the last build
1) Full BoV support is now includes. This feature has successfully reauthored at least 5 BoV titles including 2 Infinifilm titles, however, I'm going to still consider BoV beta and this will not hold up release of 1.0
2) Hopefully the last of the bugs with the custom vsrip/vsconv have been worked out relating to ScenAid (more changes are coming but these hopefully will be worked in with the next release of DoItFast4u)
Fixes:
* the BoV checkbox has been adjusted to reflect selections right away (without having to close / restart the interface)
* CLI has been fixed to take off the last ] that was occasionally left on. This should allow integration with DoItFast4u to work again
* the older dummy files have been put back in the install.. these are slightly larger then the new ones however should resolve any problems caused with dummy imports failing
* Type mismatch error 13 in GenerateData should be resolved now
* Installer corrected to install latest VSRIP/VSCONV even if files exist - these files are also copied to the ScenAid install dir in case there's a problem
Additions:
* FULL BOV SUPPORT :D
* Additional logging added to help diagnose problems
* New feature added that will skip encoding assets if all files exist. This allows for re-running against a directory if a problem occurs
* Additional Option to associate .scp files to automate_scenarist for quick import
As usual, if there's any problems please post them here... if there's problems w/ the BoV routine please be aware I need the .bov/.bdx files and a few other to diagnose the problems.
PRE RELEASE 6 (8/20/2004)
* Fix : bug causing VOBID demuxes to be off resulting in wrong scene locations and bmp locations
PRE RELEASE 7 (9/01/2004)
* Fix : improvements to the BoV routine to give more accurate Highlight/Dummy Subs
* Fix : changes to the sub routine to get rid of most (hopefully all) sub overlaps
* Change : modifications to custom vsrip/vsconv to aid with above as well as identify subs w/ no stop (shown in file name as *_NoStop)
Due to the changes above, this version is packed w/ the installer and available at:

Yes, the problem you had was with vsconv/vsrip
new versions were included so you'll need to rerip the subs (easier to just re-rip the whole thing) using the new versions
Or if all your trying to do is get yellow subs, change from "use original palette" to "use scenarist palette - yellow"

Without a doubt being somewhat out of the loop, I have a question. I have read several threads regaurding this fantastic tool in an effort to find the limitations. I have read the instructions included with the software. I am aware that for the most part button over video is possible. I also recall at one point seeing a thread that outlined exactly what the tool could and could not do, but I have failed to find it.
What I cannot find is anything confirming that seamless branching reconstruction is possible?
My initial assumption is that in fact it can do all of this correctly. I have found nothing to indicate that it cannot, including the limitations section in the manual.
Can someone please confirm this for my piece of mind? If this is indeed the case then I am completly astonished. Regaurdless of the answer this is an amasing set of tools and bravo to all that have contributed to this community over the years to make this possible.
Thanks

seamless branching isn't a limitation of ScenAid but a limitation to Scenarist.
AFAIK, no application to date can do true seamless branching..\
ScenAid will generate as close to seamless branching as Scenarist allows...
Hopefully, something will come along that can do seamless branching, but till then we just gotta live w/out it

Well since there are seamlessly branched titles this sounds a bit odd. I'm sure you meant no publicly available tools ;) And in fact there is one, TVedit if I recall the name correctly. It's a mac tool that can take projects from various authoring tools and make them seamlessly branched.

Thanks for the reply. I would like to dive into this a little further. I understand your response. I understand that technically scenarist does not support seamless branching. But the structure can be replicated, although you are going to have issues with vob id switching when the stream is not seamless. This meaning of course that one of your pgc sets can be seamless and play without pause on a non-cacheing player, but the other will suffer pausing as the player switches from one vob to the next. I would assume based on your response to my previous question that Scenaid can in fact recreate seamless branching the same as I would manually using vob demuxing, which is fantastic (hey right now its the best we have and dealing with a pause now and then is acceptable to me).
I have another question though, take this example,
PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1] (uses VOB-IDs: 1,2,3,4)
[Ch 01] [Pg 01] [Cell 01] [V/C Id: 1/ 1

[Ch 02] [Pg 02] [Cell 02] [V/C Id: 1/ 8
[Ch 03] [Pg 03] [Cell 03] [V/C Id: 5/ 1
Not seamlessly branched but vob 1 cell 8 is reused in pgc 4, also vob 4 exists in all pgc's, and vob 5 is duplicate in pgc 3 and 4. Normally I would manually reconstruct this in scenarist after demuxing by vob id. I understand that it could be done by pgc. My question is would scenaid handle this properly, and if so what would be the prefered method of demuxing? Would one simply demux by pcg and ignore the duplicate material, or would vob id be better?
Thanks again.
influenza
27th August 2004, 10:06
if you have access to the latest doitfast4u beta (available to donators) the decision is made for you. So if possible it will be demuxed by Pgc, where duplicated pgcs will not be demuxed. Otherwise it will be a vobid demux. Scenaid will create a correct scenarist script for you, which is great of course.

that's caused by a no-cce file (PGC 13 would be my guess)
simply rename the .avs file to something else and re-run on that dir

It's fixed.
But I renamed the avs, ran Scenaid on it again, but now Scenarist couldn't find the mpv. Must be something I understand wrong.
It was a PGC demuxed by VobID and V13 was a noCCE, anyway I replaced the video stream in Scenarist with the dummy from the scenaid folder and changed its duration to 12 frames.

Ok I was running your tool through the ringer to answer some of my own questions on how it handels different things. Amazing piece of work here I must say.
I ran into a problem with a particular title regaurding BoV. This title has a very complex setup. As far as I can tell there are two different BoV streams. The title is Hellboy R1 (just picked it up, didn't watch it yet don't know if its any good). I am using DoItFast4U version 1.4.7.0 with BatchCCEWS 0.9.1.5 and Scenarist 3.0.0 and of course Scenaid 1.0pre6. The title has 10 sub tracks 5 French and 5 English. I ran it twice, once removing the French tracks, and once with all tracks.
The import completed with errors.
Error No valid Subpicture exists for highlight "00:25:51:19" in video Track "VTS08_001_Track" Subpicture stream 3.
This error repeated several times with different streams and different time stamps. Ignoring the import error and attempting to compile the layout fails with the same errors. Apon examining the track at the above time stamp, only the 5th sub stream contained a sub at this stamp (the 5th sub stream contains the normal non BoV english subtitles). However there is no highlight at this location, there is one directly after this time stamp that appears to be correct with scene breaks at the begining and end of the highlight as expected. Not sure what is going on here.
Also it might be worth mentioning that I examined the rest of the track. A majority of the highlights seems to be placed correctly, and the subs in all tracks set to forced as expected with scenes at the start and end. But as you approach the end of the track I started seeing some strange things, highlights that did not have subs in all the tracks and no scene brakes at the start and end, highlights that do not appear to fill the scene even though there are valid subs there, and highlights that appear to be missing in that there are subs in all tracks that are forced and scene breaks at the start and end but no highlight.
Also worth noting is the Scenario Editor info. Although I cannot be absolutly sure it appears that there are more buttons in the film that are set in the editor. Also there are several buttons that do not have commands set to them and are noops.
D3s7, I am sending you everything I can think of that might be helpful. All of the files I am sending are from the English only rip. If there is any way I can help I am more than happy to. Of course there is always the possibility that my own stupidity is to blame so any help is appriciated.
Thanks in advance,
Trigger

@trigger638
Ah, I learned to hate that movie for its BoV structure. Thats the movie I was playing around with using the alpha highlight creation of earlier scenaid builds.
First of all, the timestamp that scenarist reports for those errors is a little misleading. I don't know if its just NTSC, or becuase of the drop fram flag, or even if its always off even in PAL projects. But its always a little off for me.
Secondly, there are supposed to be three buttons on every highlight. The first button is always NOP, the second is always for one of the BoV streams, and the third is always for the other (sorry, forgot which was the locations extras and which was the comic extras). And while either streams button is on screen it will be the only one with an actual command, with the others being NOP. The disc controls which stream is displayed by setting the defualt highlight button of the PGC to either 2 or 3 for the extras in the pre command.
Onto the next oddity. There is a bug in Scenarist 3.0 with importing highlight layers. If there are forced subs in the first track that arent buttons, they will selfishly steal the succeeding highlights. So the forced subs for when Ivan the corpse is speaking russian end up with highlights that arent supposed to be there. (Dont know if the prerelease fixed that as I uninstalled 3.0 becuase of all the annoying bugs like this one).
And finally. The button subs on this disc were broken up to accomidate language sub tracks. So most of the buttons arent really one continuous subtitle, but rather several subs (up to ten IIRC), some as small as 15 frames. In the original this manifests itself as 'blinking' buttons on some players (all of mine, but a friend insists his doesnt blink). This also presents another problem for scenarist. It doesnt seem to like highlights being to close to each other, something about the HLI buffer. And also, it will not accept a single highlight encompassing all of the subs either, giving the no valid subpicture error.
I don't know how anyone else did it, but I stripped the language tracks, keeping only the button and storyboard tracks. Then consolidated the broken up button subs and highlights into single ones (delete the extras and then edit the data end time of the first one). Also you may need to either adjust the threshold in scenaid, or manually snap the first subs to the scene boundry, as in my case several were off by quite a bit, seemingly on purpous as the original is the same way (the button starts a fair bit after the cell does, just look in menuedit each button cell will have 3 entries:0 buttons, 3 buttons and 0 buttons). All of this leads me to believe that the original was not authored in scenarist, nor can it be faithfully recreated in scenarist. Of course I could be wrong, I freely admit to being a blathering idiot at times.
My solution may not be ideal of course, perhaps most would like to keep the language subs. But for my needs it worked beatifully, even fixing the blinking buttons...
::sigh:: Sorry about the rant there. That title just cuased so much pain.

i cannot comment on this movie in particular (they have only just released hellboy in the cinemas here) but if i was a betting man i would hazard to guess that the dvd is the work of Columbia Tristar - who are also responsible for spiderman and charlies angels 2 - both of which have similar 'flashing' subs for their BoV.
i wrote a guide specifically for reauthoring spiderman and i believe the approach would work equally well for hellboy.
the guide was hosted on Eyes' website but if anyone is interested PM me and i will email you a copy, along with RB's command line tools i used (these were only for the fade in/fade out factoid subs - not sure if hellboy has those as well?)
anyway, my approach for both movies was very similar to tobytl's, in removing all subpics except one for each button and changing the times etc so the subs filled a scene.
good luck

Yeap Columbia Tristar it is. Why in the world they would go through all that pain to have the BoV in the same track as the regular subs is beyond me. Why not just have 2 or 3 pgc's using the same vob data with different subs, easy and clean with almost no overhead.
I need to apologise for hijacking this thread. I was unaware this madness exsisted. I sent the files off to D3 anyway but it is obvious to me now that this is impossible to replicate with Scenarist without some serious messing around.
Although as I read my own statment above, there may very well be an answer to this mess. While I will admit that my knowledge of the complexity of this situation falls way short, what about the possibility of seperating the subs into different tracks? Would it be an absolute nightmare to isolate the menu button or command that sets the BoV sub up and instead say hey just play this pgc instead? It seems very possible to me that one could isolate the BoV sub streams, create a track that just contained them, and then manipulate the menu buttons to play them when they are turned on in the menu?
Im sure its not quite that simple, but worth throwing out there, you never know.
Thanks again guys,
Trigger

I may have to rent it to see the layout for myself... hard to get a grasp on it sometimes from looking at the log files (thanks for sending those)
To answer the wierd time codes, it's a dropframe thing, Scenarist reports highlight problems w/out dropframe in the timecode. Safest thing is usually to find the timecode it complains about and the next sub you find is more then likely the problem one.
In theory, we should be able to automate most of this. (someone told me they had already done spiderman w/ this but if it's the same type of scenario I question if it worked for them).
The biggest question and maybe simplest solution is something I"ve been meaning to look at. Chances are those flashing subs are 1 single sub in the original, therefore 1 highlight, 1 bmp. There's a switch in the subpalyback codes that activate this feature. While Scenarist can't persay handle all these effects, I believe there is a flash effect (i know wipe/fade exist). If so we may be able to do it or at least identify it from the original and handle that way.

Pre Release 7 is now on the website
Hopefully this will fix the overlap subs
Included with this is vsrip/vsconv 1.2.0.0 which has compressed bmp's (should help with undersize issuess), nostop detection

@D3s7
I think I found some things that might be of use to you when trouble shooting those files I sent you. Same title, Hellboy R1. Its a lot closer to working that I suspected it to be. Sorry for the long post, did not know how else to explain it.
Let me explain. I am now using Scenaid 1.0pre7, and I went back to Scenarist 2.6 (thanks Tobytl, you were right about Ivan and 3.0, going back to 2.6 cleaned things up a lot). Again the import failed with the same errors. There were some subs off with the highlights, easy to fix though. One thing that did catch my attention though, when a forced sub starts just before a scene it gets chopped at the scene break. What is interesting is if you take that sub and drag it across the scene break it fills the gap to the next sub, as if the full sub was there, just not displayed. So still pretty easy to fix, just drag them across the scene boundry, make sure the highlight is lined up and your good. So basically pretty easy to get all the forced subs and highlights lined up.
Once that was done I started inspecting the buttons. Now as mentioned by Tobytl, this title has multiple forced subs and highlights per scene, due to the main English track. I took the time to manually go through and record every button's information, including the register values.
As Tobytl mentioned there are two BoV features in the same sub stream. One BoV for the comics and one for the making of stuff. In looking at the Senario Editor the first thing that I noticed was that each BoV cell only had one highlight (labeled button in the editor) icon. This seemed strange to me because remember that a lot of the cells have multiple highlights due to the main English track. So I ignored that for the moment and went on to look at the highlight icons / commands.
I found that Scenaid had only assigned commands to the highlight icons related to the making of stuff. Each highlight has 3 buttons and Scenaid recreated the number of buttons, as well as their locations, correctly. Button 1 is no-op always, button 2 has a command if the sub is for the making of (otherwise no-op), and button 3 has a command if the sub is for the comic (otherwise no-op). But, Scenaid had placed the command for the making of stuff in button 3 when it should have been in button 2. If its of interest though, the command was correct, just in the wrong place. Well I went ahead and changed all the incorrect commands and added in the comic commands that were not there.
After that was done I compiled the project and started testing it. Good news first, the buttons were displayed at the corect time and in the correct colors. Also much to my surprise the correct subs would play depending on if you seleced the comics or making of in the menu! Also the buttons worked, well sort of....
Here is what is broken. When the button comes up you must hit enter right away or it will not work. What appears to be happening is that only the first highlight in each cell has the command informtaion. What has me confused though is I know that the buttons exsist for all of the highlights. If I continue to hit the enter key the action color for the button will keep displaying right up to the point where the forced subs stop displaying (the start and end times for the subs are right on the money). Another way that I have verified that the buttons do in fact exsist is by loading the sub stream into the simulator. I have counted every sub with buttons and it directly related to the total number of highlights in the track. So the buttons exist but are not represented in the Senario Editor and therefore cannot be assigned commands. How is this possible? I thought that every time you created a highlight, a highlight icon was created in the Senario Editor that represents it??
Anyway those are my findings, if you know of a way to assign the rest of those highlights commands I will have a complete working title.
Hope this helps out,
Trigger

I have been using ScenAid for my last few backups (working on Sopranos S4). Using DIF4U 1.4.0, BatchCCEWS, and NuMenu4U. After ScenAid checks the files in the directory it gives me the following error( this has happened on all 4 discs ).

If I click OK and close ScenAid and reopen it, point it back to the directory, it proceeds just fine. Not sure what the issue there is, but it works when I re-run it. Just though someone should be aware of this. Amazing program D3s7. Thanks to all involved in the Big3 Guides. All your hard work is certainly appreciated.

Specifically the NoStop detection? I ask becuase the combination of dummy sub removal and NoStop insertion have pretty much made the fading info track in spiderman unusable without lots of manual work (or decent script writing skills). I fixed it with a perl script that used the duration tags to generate and adjust display starts and stops, also injecting the fade tags. That brings up a minor annoyance/bug, the duration tags for the "Sub-picture Play" items arent updated if a dummy is removed right after a nostop sub. Of course in my case, this was a godsend of a bug :D.
<EDIT>
Ok, the Data End Time of the Sub-picture Items arent zeroed either. Forgot about that, but its the duration tags that really matter. Scenarist seems to auto correct the Data End Times, but will only touch the duration if something about the subs is physically changed from within the program. (Sub is moved/edited for example)
</EDIT>
Also, I do believe it would have been possible with prerelease 6 to compile Spiderman with the BoV appearing to be correct. At least the R1 disc. It doesnt have any broken up subs for buttons, also the buttons dont flash/blink. I am fairly positive the PAL versions do though. But, no commands were insered into the buttons, and they are pretty simple set a gprm and linktailpgc jobbers. (using prerelease 7, I lost the ver 6 setup and update, delete key got trigger happy)
Oh yea, D3s7, I do believe flashing can be accomplished within the substream. If anything it can be done with a series of 1 frame fade effects... But I still dont think thats the case with Hellboy R1.
Trigger638: I think you could use menuedit to insert commands into the further iterations of the buttons that dont have them. It would be fairly tedious, but possible, I think . Or you could add MenuLists for each button 'group'. There needs to be the same number of MenuLists in a cell as there are Highlight plays, with different names of course. I know that sounds wierd, but I manually created the buttons with commands and exported the script, and thats how scenarist put it in there. I'll have to find my original Hellboy to check out the new versions of Scenaid to see if they fixed anything, and maybe downgrade from Scenarist 2.7 to 2.6, as it wont compile past the large button group (the one with 10 subs) without giving me an HLI buffer error. Though with scenarist, that error might not even be related to the unusual highlight configuration...

Good point.... i forgot to change the nostop switch in pre7... i've fixed it and it'll be in pre8 (located under advanced bov)
I'll add a switch for removing the dummy subs associated w/ dummy highlights as well instead of just removing them.. I can see where there would be merit.
I'm trying to fix up a few things now.. which reminds me.. Anyone have/know of a reference doc w/ info on ecl files? I'm thinking of creating ecl files directly and totally skipping BatchCCEWS (still will create the ccedata.txt file I think...
That and bitrate calculations? Enough people have requested this that it's worth adding... dynamic bitrate info... although I need some decent calculations/formulas
These might be post version 1 though... I'll never release a v1 if I keep all this up
