View Full Version : Can I output to SPDIF and analogue simultaneously?

My new soundcard is capable of using both the SPDIF and the analogue mini-jack connectors at the same time (opposite my now retired SBLive)

This means I can play an AC3 movie in a videoplayer (AC3filter set to SPDIF output), and play e.g. music in WinAmp at the same time through the analogue output. (different amps in different rooms, no problem)

This raises two questions:
1) How can I force the audio of a non-AC3 movie (that is, one which doesn't use AC3filter to decode) to output through SPDIF?
(so I can do the same trick as above with non-AC3 movies)

2) Is there any codecs/players/utilities/whatever that can output to both SPDIF and analogue simultaneously? (AC3 throughput to SPDIF and decoded audio to analogue)

Hi there. Well, I've just got a new soundcard and I realized the ability to output SPDIF and analogue simultaneously is a soundcard ability. Before when I chose SPDIF bypass on AC3Filter I got no sound on my speakers (connected on the analogue output). Now I do have sound and I realized that in the case of AC3, the programs really pass the original Dolby Digital stream to the soundcard that decodes it.

Up until now I've successfully used the SPDIF bypass for absolutely all types of stream, including MP3. But in this case (MP3, Vorbis, AAC, etc) I think the player first decodes it and send a pure PCM stream to the soundcard (which, in my case, could successfully do Dolby Pro-Logic II processing on it).

Hope that helps. By the way, I'm using an Audigy 2 soundcard.
