Does the Doom9 forum or homepage have a standard logo/icon?
As far as I can see the forum has this: -
http://img16.exs.cx/img16/5032/SMD_Doom9_vb_bullet.gif
and this: -
http://img16.exs.cx/img16/2909/SMD_Doom9.gif
And the homepage does not have anything :(
I don't know about some of you guys but I reckon it might be kinda cool to have nice square shaped icon of some kind....

We could have a forum logo contest - it worked great at hydrogenaudio.
I'm sure there are plenty of graphically talented forum members.

Very posh!
Now that the forum layout has been upgraded, I think now is the time to have a swanky logo :)

Obviously I can modify a few things... Now that I look at it, it may be better to shrink the 9 a little bit and darken the .net. Here is the output:

I can do any alterations if you like.

Texture the "Doom" part like the "9"
joshbm
20th June 2005, 18:24
I did and didn't like the output... Too much of something can be a bad thing.
It looks too... bubbly and.. there is no real center point. If you'd like I can attempt to redo it with "doom" similar lettering (I threw away my first attempt with "doom" in the same lettering).

Nice work, joshbm! Not flawless, but definitely a logo with a lot of potential. Here are some suggestions:
- As much as 3 fonts in the logo (.net and the 9 are the same font, I guess). Less would help to achieve a more consistent look.
- How would it look with non-italic "Doom"?
- It seems to me that doom9.org is more common than doom9.net. Just load doom9.net and look at the links: they all point to doom9.org/something. So maybe change that.
- It's "definitive", not "definate".

Well, I think the Doom part needs some pazzaz!
Also, for the record, I'm not speaking for D9. I have no idea what his thoughts are concerning this thread.
Also, Also, I always use .org, I see both listed on the main page. Not sure if he prefers either one.

Tried another font for "Doom". Right now I'm not logged on my desktop (which I have 3000+ fonts)... I may look into more fonts.

I especially like the third version. The »techie« font was a great idea. May I suggest a less conservative font for the rest of the text? Would fit better imo. Oh, and the standard way of underlining is evil(TM) typographically because the line cuts right through letters like g, p, y etc.
But before we continue with logos maybe we should wait for an official statement on the whole matter. Doom9, what do you think about a logo contest?

@joshbm: I kinda like it.. but I have a gripe: the 9... sure it looks nice, but I guess what I'm looking for is a logo you see on a billboard and on top of a skyscraper (cos one day I'm going to rule the world ;).. naturally with all the colors that wouldn't be possible here.
I haven't seen more than the first and last version.. I definitely like the font choice on the last one.. it feels right to me. Not too extravagant, yet still it has a certain unique character.

But before we continue with logos maybe we should wait for an official statement on the whole matter. Doom9, what do you think about a logo contest?Well.. we've had one in the past.. didn't turn out what I wanted... but sure, keep them coming here.. but to have another officialized contest with rules, deadlines and such and then me having to sift through hundreds of submissions.. it seems that an open discussion like the one that has been going on already generated something than is better than everything else I got in the last contest. If that 9 can be nailed down to something I like we might already have a keeper.
I have tried many times to draw up something as well.. I figured the font was one thing but always got stuck with the 9. I suppose using the same font as for the rest makes it stand out in the wrong way since it's the last character.. even if it is a number. But other people will certainly come up with ideas I've never could've imagined.

The plain one! Because of its simplicity.
What I still don't like is the multitude of fonts.
Would be great, joshbm, if you could create a version like this:
- "doom" as it is now.
- The "Backup Source" font for everything else, including the 9.
- Make the URL bold and both lines beneath the "doom" exactly as wide as the "doom" is.
Might work or might not. But should be worth trying.
Don't have that "doom" font or i'd give it a try myself...

I like the "plain" one too ;)
Without knowing the resolution Doom9 would like to use for his logo (but i guess it wont be all that big), is there any chance on sharpening up the type faces for your 310x134 examples?
Cheers
Doom9
23rd June 2005, 21:41
does it need to be that big? The plain one has the advantage that the 9 appears less big.. in all the other versions it dominates the entire logo even more. So if we leave the color for now, and experiment with size, position (and font) change size and position of it to see how that work.
One thing to consider.. we might not always use the logo with the subtext.. if you leave the tagline and url away the 9 makes the whole thing way too big.

Would you prefer to have the "9" be the same height as the "d" of doom?

Both of them the www.doom9.org font is changed to the "DVD Backup" font.
Too bad you guys voted out my favorite :-P... The shiny "9" one. Although I do agree the "9" was a bit too big for even my liking. I guess to give my personal opinion Brother John, I do not like the "9" with the "DVD Backup" font.
For some reason my program is messing up... So the artifacts you see around the edges won't be there in the final product. Not only that, but, the JPEG compression is also causing artifacts, so once we get to a final version I can mail you a loseless format such as a PNG. As well as take the time to professionally compress it in the JPEG format.

It is to light. The small lettering at the bottom is a bit difficult to read being that small and light of a color. Maybe just darken it a tad?

@Msc_Alex: Everything except number two are out of the question.. it doesn't look right despite the font. Number two has a basic problem.. the 9 looks like a q.. And I think it has to start a bit higher than the other small letters as to not use too much vertical space.. perhaps something in the middle like the reverse of the intel e could be used (it's slightly lowered as compared to the rest.. put the 9 slightly higher than the rest.. and of course make it identifyable as a 9).

still too big.. and changing the style in a logo.. I don't know. it think we should start from the premise that it'll just be 5 letters.. let's forget about the subtext for the moment. We can figure something out for that (it looks good, but since you align it with the 9 it means the 9 is under certain constraints which I think what is making me not like it at the moment).

The 9 doesn't just work if it looks like a g, or a q. So that rules out most of the 2 posts above this. Msc_Alex's 3rd colum contains the only thing that actually makes the 9 unmistakeable.. displaying any of the letters doesn't look right though.. I think doom needs to be written the way joshbm came up with. Underlines also don't seem to work at all. I guess now a 9 with the blue color would be interesting.. and try the same with the subtext as well because it needs to work both ways.
and how will that 9 look if it's not fully interconnected, like the d?

I don't like this font for "doom" at all. It reminds me of the segment displays on old early digital clocks. I think that pegs us as low tech and stuck in the past. It just looks cheap to me.

Which by-the-way, still works perectly, even after twenty odd years. The display was always a little too bright for my tastes though. So I've put it in the spare room to annoy our guests :)

joshbm, you're right. My 9 is ugly. But the other new version is fine.
Like Pamel I wanted to point out the hard to read text under the "doom", but basically Doom9 already solved that problem :).
Msc_Alex and SMD: Could you color the 9? Right now it often looks either like a "q" or like a "g", but a little blue might solve that.
General thought: Maybe designing the complete website header, not only the logo, would be more effective. I guess so because the logo would be an integral part of the complete header, so they need to fit anyway.

@Msc_Alex: what happend with the first land last 9? I see jagged edges. Besides that, number 3 and 4 definitely don't work. Though with number 1 there's a mismatch between the d and the 9.. one is closed the other isn't.
