View Full Version : [modified subject] Getting block artifacts when using interpolation de-interlacers

When I play my captured/transferred DV content (captured with Adobe Premiere) in Media Player Classic (or Premiere), it looks just like it does on the camera. No interlacing, blocking or smoothing. When I open it in VirtualDubMod, it's extremely interlaced. When I try de-interlacing it with AVISynth plugins, it looks blocky (due to stretched fields). Why does it only look good in Media Player (like on the camera itself)? There must be a way to get the MPC output into VDub? (DirectShowSource doesn't help)
I'm sorry if this sounds a bit stupid. I'm new to DV capture and i don't know how to put this any better. :P
thnx
EDIT: Ignore this msg. Scroll down for the REAL issue. ;)

I'm not familiar with Premiere, but I assume that it does some de-interlacing internally. Have a look at this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=79386) to get the same [and possibly better] result by using Avisynth.
Hope this helps,
Thoralf.

...look at the settings of MPC.
Sometimes it just show you one field of your DV content.
That way it doesn´t need deinterlacing and looks smooth on computer screen, - but less sharp due to the lack of ~50% of the details.:D

Now I've decided to deinterlace the video. I have one question though. I'm using FieldDeinterlace() from the Decomb 5.2.1 package. Shouldn't FieldDeinterlace require me to input the correct Field Order like Telecide requires? If not, then why?
thnx

Telecide reassembles frames, it is not a deinterlacer alone. More information can be found in the documentation included with the DeComb filter package.

Unless you plan to only ever watch your camcorder material on a computer, then don't de-interlace!
Currently, LCD projectors, DLP projectors and probably LCD/plasma TV sets all do de-interlacing. That is fine, if you de-interlaced first, you will not see any difference.
If you watch the final output on a CRT television, it will not look as good as the original interlaced material.
I assume you are capturing your camcorder footage to edit and create a piece (for DV tape or for a DVD). To maintain the best quality, do some research into interlacing and find out how to deal with it.
Once you know how to do this, the results are better, and the procedure is relatively easy. There are still some complexities, but not that bad (eg, reversing the play direction of an interlaced video and fast/slow motion).

I am going to de-interlace. :angry: I'm working on a music video for my friend and he made a beta transfer for the TV channels. So my work will only be distributed through P2P :sly: and the internet and viewed 80% on computer screens.
When I de-interlace with FieldDeinterlace, blend=true gives me "out-of-focus" results on moving things and blend=false gives me blocks on some very interlaced frames. :( Is there any plugin available which is able to give best of both worlds?
Will post screenshots in a moment.

Sorry 56k users. Can't downsize since it would ruin the interlacing. It's 6 x ~500 KB, total around 3 MB.
Source frame:

Camera is zooming.
blend=true frame:
http://www.simnet.is/rufuz/bleeps/3138blend.png
Acceptable results, since camera is zooming.
blend=false frame:
http://www.simnet.is/rufuz/bleeps/3138interpolate.png
Unacceptable results. Too many blocks.

Camera is stationary.
blend=true frame:

Unacceptable results. Hands too blurry.
blend=false frame:

Maybe acceptable results. Minor blocks. Better then blend=true.
Anybody have a good solution to this?

KernelDeInt 1.4.0 gives the same blocky results as FieldDeinterlace blend=false :(

Try, I think, Donald Graft's "Smart Bob" filter for virtual dub. (The one with only 3 or 4 config settings.)
It doubles the frame rate (ie: if you start with 25fps you end up with 50fps). You would then probably have to decimate.
I use it for slow motion of very fast objects, and I find it delivers amazing results. Very highly recommended.
BTW, he has several de-interlacers, but I've found this one really rocks!

Do you mean DGBob (http://neuron2.net/dgbob/dgbob.html)?
