Suppose you have a piece of audio recorded in stereo wave file. Then you convert that to mono using Cool Edit or whatever else. Now you have a single channel file. Then you copy that channel, creata a new blank stereo wave file, and paste that channel into both channels of the new empty file. Now you have a stereo file again. Does this result in quality loss somehow (I don't mean encoding loss since I'm keeping everything uncompressed, but I mean loss from mixing channels and stuff).

You'll be loosing stereo data.

It's like:

Color --> B/W --> Color. It's still in B/W :)
