View Full Version : Cyclic redundancy error....media or files?

I have a DVD that includes three files that an IT person who uses mostly Mac stuff made. Not sure of the media brand; it's unmarked. He has given me the file I'm interested in as an MPEG2 on one disk, and a completed DVD with the file and several others on it. In both cases I got a cyclic redundancy error and I've been unable to open the files with DVDecryptor, Shrink, Rejig, TMPEG Author and Encoder, and Smartripper. I also cannot copy the VOB file with Windows. This is definitely NOT a "dirty media" issue; it's occured with two different disks, and they are brand new with no visible . Meanwhile, the disk will play on two laptops and 3 DVD players, but not on my primary machine that gets the redundancy errors; it will play but pauses and skips frequently. Logically, this has to be some kind of incompatibility issue between either my drive and the files, or my drive and the media he is using. Anybody have any ideas?

Normally the cyclic redundancy erro occurs while there is corrupt data on your disk. This includes poor media. But as you said the disk is playable in other computers, i think your primary machine's drive is problamatic now. Perhaps, dust in reading lense. Need to repair i think.

I can easily decrypt any other disk but this one....so the lens is OK...the problem is specific for this disk (or file)....

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Your drive doesnt like the discs.

Well, I hate to admit my own stupidity, but the problem appears to be the fact that I have a DVD+R drive and the disk was made on a -R drive. I had assumed that since all new players can play either, all drives could also. I've been using the drive for 6 months pretty heavily, but this has never come up before. Take home message...think simple.....
