Symantec Corp. is racing to provide a software update that will allow its products to be seen by Windows platforms upgraded with Windows XP SP2.

The security vendor is also ironing out several issues related to the ease of deployment of the Symantec update for SP2, particularly when the update is distributed across multiple clients.

"Windows Security Center is not able to read or monitor the status of Symantec security applications. So to facilitate that in a secure way, we are providing an update in the next day or so to make sure our products can be reported ," Garcia-Manrique told CRN on Tuesday.

The Symantec patch could force Symantec customers to delay upgrading their Windows systems with SP2. A support bulletin on Symantec's Web site (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004080212383739?Open&src=ivr_na_con)informed customers that "Symantec encourages its customers to install the product update prior to installing SP2 in order to avoid incorrect reporting from Windows Security Center."

Note: Some of the symantec updates for SP2 can be found

IntelliType Pro software enables you to customize the unique features of your Microsoft keyboard to fit your needs. With IntelliType software, you can reassign many of the keys to open a program, file, or Web page, or to perform commands, such as Find, Show Desktop, or other application-specific functions.
You can disable keys you sometimes press accidentally, like CAPS LOCK, and modify keyboard settings, such as updated horizontal scrolling and zoom slider functionality. IntelliType Pro software even offers extended application support, as well as biometrics support for advanced identity management. If you have a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, you will need to have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.

The moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s.
Matthias Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800 hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire cable".

RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it is simply unbelievable".

Many, many users are reporting problems with SP2 limiting outbound TCP/IP connections. This appears to be nailing anyone who makes heavy network use of their machine, including especially users running P2P applications

The problem with Windows XP SP2 & DIVX

- The DivX problem is going to be repeated on quite a few applications. Anything that generates machine code into a memory buffer and then calls it will be hit, until the authors modify their software to tell Windows what they're doing. The calls for this have existed since the introduction of the Win32 API - it's just that until now, nothing went wrong if you didn't use them.

I'd still like to know what exactly they mean with 'may behave differently' - do they basicly say "It will crash a lot more times than it did before"?
I'm not touching SP2 - hell I dont even have SP1 installed so... :o

You can't stretch Item 4 enough. Think about that - it's an outrage
"USB 2 is not doing well, so let's make FireWire 2 slower"

I can't believe they actually did this!
Even if the drivers are going to be corrected with a patch - it will create rumors that FireWire 2 doesn't work well with WinXP, also installation will be more complicated for the standard user (install a patch)

sp2 seems to include a new directX version, 9.0c, too. The date on the US version is 4th august 2004. I have not noticed any problems with it so far. Hopefully they integrated the tuner patch...

I found a problem with SP2:

Premiere Pro 1.5 suddenly made crackling noises on playback (on every HDD activity it started crackling)

I tried different things like re-installing Premiere, re-installing the soundcard, lowering DirectX hardware acceleration for the soundcard - nothing helped.

Then I uninstalled SP2 and the noises were gone

My system:

WinXP Pro

Athlon 2700+ (TBred)
Epox 8K5A2+ (VIA KT 333)
512MB DDR RAM (Corsair XMS PC2700)
Abit ATI Radeon 9600XT VIO, 256MB
Philips Acoustic Edge (PSC706) Sound Card
2x IBM Deskstar 120GB IDE drives (7200rpm) on HPT IDE controller
1x Western Digital 60GB IDE drive on standard IDE controller
1x Pioneer A06 DVD Burner on standard IDE controller
(plus some other stuff like firewire card, an old SCSI CD drive and all other parts I forgot to mention... ;) )
