I've got one using CCE to recode the MPEG, but I never got it to work proprely. DVD Shrink 3.2 gives "not to bad" quality. Be sure to don't go bellow 60%.
App: DVD ReBuilder
MPEG2 encoder:

[edit]
The format you do is DVDR ;)

Here's a good explanation of transcoding vs. encoding (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=525499&highlight=transcoding#post525499) that jggimi took the time to explain to us, you might well find it helpful.
You'll certainly experience some loss of resolution with Shrink, but you can usually get over the 70% mark by using the "Re-authoring" option. Shrink's speed and ease of use make it an attractive program, a lot of us start with it before moving on to more complicated transcoding routines. Should you settle on another program that suits your quality criteria, Shrink would come in handy for the situations where you're pressed for time, or need an easy tool for a teaching example.

It's hard to eat solid food until you get some "teeth".
It would be easier to read your posts if you used some space between sentences and capitalization. Your "eye to brain" co-ordination must be better than mine; each time I hit the end of one of your sentences, my mind goes into neutral and I have to re-orient myself. :) I'm also afraid that if you submit a longer, more detailed post, I'll have a processing meltdown and need heavier medication.

hi radar:
if i get you right you want to know which dvdripper (in the form of decrypting the content of a dvd to your hd) we prefer?!
well, i'll dare to say that DVDdecrypter is still the most commonly used decrypter around here! it has the most features and is probably easiest to use too!
oh and btw, iespell (www.iespell.com) helps to get rid of those nasty typos :P
