View Full Version : MSU Deflicker Settings?

As discussed in another thread, there seem to be two VirtualDub Deflicker filters, the one by Donald Graft
http://neuron2.net ,

and the one from MSU
http://compression.graphicon.ru/video/deflicker/index_en.html

That other thread mostly concerned the Graft filter, I now have a question about the MSU filter.

I tried it with a small test clip from a flickery video I want to use it on. I used the default settings, as I have no idea otherwise how to set them.

It did a good job of deflickering the video. However, at one part the screen suddenly became incredibly bright, washed out. If I used this filter on the whole movie I don't know if that might occur at other times as well.

Does anyone know--is there anything I can do to the settings, that might stop that washing-out effect from happening? There is no documentation with the download, unlike the Graft filter. The MSU web page (see above) has a picture of the settings dialog, tells a little about a couple of the settings (which I don't fully understand), and nothing about others. Seeing a link at the top of the page to Forum, I clicked there, to ask about it there, but it was all in Russian, which I don't read nor write. (I think the MSU filters come from Russia.) The settings are totally different from those in the Graft deflick filter.

Does anyone know what the settings mean in the MSU Deflicker filter, and what setting might help with that washing out problem?

I don't know if this will work, but I will try to stream here the picture from the web page mentioned above, of the settings dialog, so you can see what it looks like. Perhaps even some not familiar with the particular filter, but more video knowledgeable than me, could figure out what they mean.

What does "safety" mean here? Would increasing the safety perhaps decrease the chance of such occurences (as the "wash-out" effect" happening, while perhaps lowering to some extent the amount of deflickering? I really have no idea.

A little OT, but has anyone used both of the deflicker filters (Graft and MSU) (if you know of others, include them too), and could compare the two? Do some kinds of video work best with one, and other video work better with the other? If so, explain. Or have you found one of the filters to always work better for you? The MSU filter is certainly quicker to use, as it does not require the "Prepare" stage required of the Graft Deflick filter.

Any input would be appreciated, especially concerning the whitewash effect. Thank you.
