I am using my laptop to output video to my TV, one of the TV's doesnt have a S-Video IN connection, so i bought a S-Video to RGB cable, it works fine except for the annoying fact that it is in Black and White!!!

I tried changing all the settings, reading the manual, changing the TV settings, nothing works. The S-Vid cable came with a S-Video Side and at the other end, becomes two RGB connectors, one of them when I plug into the TV give me the B/W picture, but the other does nothing, the guy at the store said the other was audio, but how can that be, I am only outputting video through the S-Video on my Laptop, the audio has a separate cable.

Specs:

HP zt3020EA
ATi Mobility Radeon 9200

More Details via my sig.

Any help?

Do you mean SCART connectors when you say RGB connectors?

If so, it sounds like

1. The lead is simply a physical connector convertor. S-Video outputs B/W on one pair of pins and the Colour signal on the other pair. Your adaptor could simply be connecting these 2 signals to their approriate counterparts on the SCART connector. Your SCART input on the TV can't handle separate B/W and Colour signals and just displays the B/W picture. Try another TV and/or SCART input

2. The lead is broken.

If you are in the US, it is much the same story with out the SCART stuff.

The PC out may use a 9 pin connection. 4 of these pins carry Y/C and the grounds. The others carry composite/ground and maybe L/R/ground for audio.

If you use a regular 4 pin (svideo type) cable, you get luma (y) out of one RCA jack, and chroma (c)out of the other.

So ... you can either make sure you have a 9 pin connection on your pc, and get a 9 pin cable that has the correct outs (usually these cables are combo composite/svideo/audio lookin things ....)

Or

Go to some place like best buy and find a $20 video switch. These usually allow svideo in and composite out (RCA yellow). Then you can go PC(svideo)->switch(RCA)->TV.

If you have several SCART's on your TV, try the other one too. My TV has two SCARTS, but only one of them has s-video pins.

The TVtool site (http://tvtool.info/english/cablefaq_e.htm) has a nice faq about these things by the way (also how to make a simple s-video to composite converter)

by scart do you mean the wide conenctors? RGB is like the small round ones with the pin in the middle, i think i'll try and change the cable, i thought i was doing something wrong.

chapter 9.3 of the doom9 capture guide has pictures of the various connectors.

scart is the square long one.

A small round one with pin in the middle sounns like a RCA connector. Those are used for composite video (usually a single yellow one ) or for component video (YPbPr, mostly three, colored red, green and blue). Despite the color scheme, component video is NOT the same as RGB!
