This is good news for me and probably good for some of you as well.

Straight to the point: the movie is "Alien" PAL , the one with the theathrical version and the director's cut.
The reason for wanting to do a straight copy instead of DVD9->DVD5 :
This is a SB disc and I was unsuccessful in making a good enough SB backup.

The means:
Sony DRU-700A writer
Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X (13euros/disc)
Nero 6 Ultra Edition

The process:
DVD Decrypter in File Mode which gives me nice "clean" DVD-Video files
Also I used IfoEdit to strip out some unwanted stuff as we all do
And "Get VTS Sectors" as usual

In Nero I switched to Nero Express and chose DVD-Video, located my files, gave the disc a label etc
Nero complained with something about non-compliant files or something, ignore and continue. (Could be a small bug)
I noticed nothing of the LayerMagic thingie but I guess it's done its job. Result: the disc works, on PC with PowerDVD and in my stand-alone (Sony DVP-NS330). From what I've seen, the movie plays flawless. I didn't check the layer transition yet, but skipping to layer2 chapters is smooth.

Score: 1 - 0 :D

Thanks for the info.

I can't wait to try my DL when the price/availability on the discs is better. :D

Does anyone know if DVD Decrypter supports DL writing for an iso file > 4.33Gb ??
Its all getting very exciting :)

I was informed by a disc supplier that you should always use the DVD-ROM booktype when burning the DL discs. With a quality disc like the verbatim you can get nearly 90% success ratio on standalones using the dvd-rom booktype, but using the DVD+DL booktype you might get as low as 60% ratio.
